Deadline to Protect Sea Turtles

Urgent: Immediate Support Needed to Protect Sea Turtles Thank you to all who recently sent comments to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) against its proposed plan to allow swordfish longline fishing along the U.S. west coast. Unfortunately, there is still more work to do. The NMFS has now submitted its fishing permit request to the California Coastal Commission. If granted, this permit would violate the California Coastal Act by undermining successful conservation measures protecting the critically endangered leatherback sea turtle, valuable fish stocks, and other marine life, as well as the health and integrity of California’s rich and diverse marine ecosystems. On August 10, the

Commission will hold a public hearing on whether to approve the permit request. Please take action today to help the turtles. Comments must be submitted to the Commission by 5:00pm PST, Wednesday, August 8, to be included in the public record. You can also help the turtles by attending the hearing, and voicing support for a “no” vote by the Commission on the proposed permit.
