Measuring just 2 feet wide and allowing no freedom of movement, veal crates have been long considered one of the cruelest institutions in factory farming. The announced phase out, which is supposed to be complete by 2017, is significant and illustrates that growing consumer awareness is starting to have an impact, but there is still much work to be done.
