Last year alone, the USDA cited them for causing trauma, behavioral stress, physical harm, and unnecessary discomfort to two elephants; failure to provide veterinary care to a lame elephant, an elephant with a swollen leg, and a camel with bleeding wounds; improper handling of dangerous animals; and failure to maintain the zebra enclosure. And this is just the tip of the iceberg; much of their animal abuse goes unseen by either inspectors or spectators. One example of Ringling's hidden cruelty is shown in the story of Angelica, an elephant born at Ringling's breeding compound. So that she could go on the road with Ringling when she was less than two years old, workers used ropes to prematurely separate baby Angelica from

her mother. The nightmarish ordeal burned her young skin and left visible wounds. Since then, Angelica has been subject to continued abuse at the hands of Ringling employees. Just last year, Ringling was cited for causing behavioral stress, physical harm, trauma, and unnecessary discomfort to Angelica and another elephant, Rudy. View a video of Ringling's animal abuse.
