Here's an opportunity to tell Steve Harris how you feel about his love of rodeo on his stupid blog. Remember, he's the one who called our protesters at Ringling "dopes"? Now he's praising the rodeo. I hope he gets blasted from AR people about this like he did the circus. On Friday night, we took our granddaughter, Isabella, to the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, which was celebrating its 50th anniversary. The smells and sights brought back all kinds of dusty memories and, in a way, the night was an anniversary for me, too. In 1967, at age 14, I never missed a weekend at

the rodeo. Every Friday and Saturday night, I was in the same arena with the bull riders and calf ropers, breathing in the same red dirt. My job, though, wasn't nearly so dangerous. I sold programs, at 35 cents a pop, and got a nickel for every one I sold. I usually sold about a hundred a night, which meant I pocketed a substantial $10 for the weekend. I was glad to see that, 40 years later, inflation hadn't hit program sales so hard. At $1, they're still a bargain. And though the new arena is now indoors and air conditioned, little else has changed. The red dirt still smells the same.
