Yeee haw! Five injured at Labor Day Rodeo in Sonoita Tuesday, September 11, 2007 8:19 AM PDT Injuries are not unheard of in the rough-and-tumble sport of rodeo, and many contestants consider it a sin to leave the arena by ambulance. By JB MillerThere were a number or rodeo-related accidents during the three-day event over the Labor Day weekend, according to the Tubac Fire Department and the Sonoita-Elgin Fire Department. An adult and child fell from horseback, a woman fell from a horse, and two contestants who were hurt by bulls.A spokesperson for the Santa Cruz County Fair and Rodeo Association might not have been aware of all the facts when he said last week that there were "no major injuries" during the rodeo. The majority of injuries occurred on Sept. 2, with the worst involving a woman who fell off a horse and injured her leg. The incident reportedly happened outside the arena, and there were conflicting reports as to whether the rider was a contestant or not.The woman was airlifted from the fairgrounds and flown to University Medical Center (UMC) in Tucson. In a similar incident, a young female rider was taken by ambulance to Tucson Medical Center after being thrown from her horse. A spokesperson for the Sonoita-Elgin Fire Department said it was a precautionary measure. Rodeo officials said she was a contestant. In addition, bulls injured two rodeo contestants. On Sunday a cowboy had his foot stepped on and initially refused treatment. He was eventually taken by ambulance to UMC.The following day a cowboy was gored by a bull and was taken by a friend to an unnamed hospital."I'm sure those guys are at work today," said Sonoita resident Scott McDaniel who was at the rodeo and knew of the bull-riding injuries.
