Help Protect Dolphins Dolphins are just one of the marine species that would benefit from the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea is an important step in protecting our oceans and restoring America’s leadership in international conservation efforts. Please urge your Senators to support this vital treaty. Dear Margaret, Dolphins and other ocean wildlife are in trouble. But this week we have a chance to help protect them when the Senate Foreign Relations Committee holds a hearing on the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, an international agreement that would help protect our oceans and the wondrous wildlife that lives there. This is an important opportunity. Please urge your Senators to support ratification of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Ratifying the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea would help protect dolphins, whales and other marine species by improving international coordination of ocean conservation efforts, especially on marine protected areas and high seas fisheries and in the battle against ocean pollution. Now more than ever, international cooperation is needed to protect our ocean wildlife. Yet the U.S. remains one of only a handful of countries in the world that still hasn’t ratified this important treaty. Many of the world’s fisheries are already drastically depleted. Critical habitat -- such as coral reefs -- is badly degraded. And excessive pollution continues to threaten marine life and human well-being. New global changes, such as the acidification of the water itself due to climate change and the increasing discharge of alien, invasive marine species in ships' ballast water, are also straining our delicate ocean ecosystems. Our ocean wildlife can’t afford to wait. Please send a message to your Senators right now and urge them to support ratification of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Ratification of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea is long overdue. President Clinton signed the treaty in the 1990s. The 2004 Republican-led Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously endorsed it. President Bush and the Navy have both spoken out in favor of ratifying this important treaty. Still, some in the Senate continue to block decisive action to protect our oceans, refusing to acknowledge the importance of U.S. leadership and international cooperation in protecting the environment. This week’s hearing could be an important turning point for America’s role as a leader in international conservation efforts. Please take action now. Sincerely, Rodger SchlickeisenPresidentDefenders of Wildlife P.S. Ratifying the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea won’t just help dolphins and other ocean wildlife. It will also help break down long-standing barriers to U.S. membership in other global conservation efforts -- in particular, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which would help improve protections for species worldwide. Please take action now and voice your support for U.S. leadership in the fight to protect the environment. © Copyright 2007 Defenders of Wildlife.
