Guest guest
Randy Turner of Texas Humane Legislation Network (www.thln.org) updates us (below) on the question of legality of shipping horses for slaughter out of the USA. As we know, slaughtering horses for their flesh is now illegal in the USA. Thanks to Randy for keeping us current on this important issue. Margaret MorinVegetarian Network of Dallaswww.vegnod.com*********************************** State Representative Warren Chisum of Pampa, Texas has requested an attorney general’s opinion as to whether or not it would be legal for a foreign corporation to transport horse meat for human consumption through Texas for sale in a foreign jurisdiction. See: http://www.oag.state.tx.us/opinions/requests_ga/RQ0623GA.pdf. It should be noted that a Mexican horse slaughtering company in the federal Beltex case trucked horse meat through Texas to DFW for shipment overseas. Rep. Chisum’s concern for a Mexican slaughterhouse is…interesting. The profitability of a Mexican horse slaughtering plant must be a really important issue to his constituents in the panhandle. Several Texas newspapers have begun running stories about the horrific cruelty that takes place at Mexican slaughterhouses. See e.g.: http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/metro/stories/MYSA093007.01A.horseslaughter.3496288.html and http://www2.mysanantonio.com/specials/20070929slaughter3/index.html . Texas highways and airports should not be used to further the horror of the Mexican killing factories. Any attorneys who are interested in filing responses with the attorney general must do so by Oct. 7. Randy Randall E.
