Good News:The Vegetarian Resource Group will be giving out two scholarship awards of $5,000 each to high school seniors who have demonstrated a dedication to promoting vegetarianism in their communities. Past recipients of the scholarships include students who have created local vegetarian groups, worked to improve vegetarian offerings in their school cafeterias, and campaigned for more vegetarian items to be sold in their local supermarkets. Applicants must be American high school seniors and plan on attending college in the United States. For full details and to learn more about VRG, Liz Lovely has re-released their line of award-winning vegan cookies (you may remember that they were given our coveted Product of the Year title in the 2005 Veggie Awards) as certified organic, fair trade, and, of course, vegan. Liz Lovely has had the vegan certification since 2003, but is the first cookie

company to meet all three standards. With seals of approval from the Northeast Organic Farmer's Association, TransFair USA, and Vegan Action, the cookies are a conscience—if not calorie—friendly indulgence. Click here for full details. The Not-So-Good News:Wheat gluten shipments from China have recently been refused at US borders due to lack of proof that they were free of the contaminant melamine, according to USA Today. Melamine, an industrial chemical, was found in dog and cat foods and believed to be the cause of deaths for numerous animals earlier this year. Prices for domestic wheat gluten have already begun to rise as a result of the movement away from Chinese sources. Since wheat gluten is a common ingredient in vegan

food products, like faux meat, this serves as another reminder that you can't go wrong in the produce section. Look for an in-depth evaluation of food labels and ingredient sources in the November+December issue of VegNews! On a related note, tofu from the Quong Hop & Co. manufacturing company was recalled recently due to suspected contamination of Listeria monocytogenes, a microorganism which can cause serious infections, especiallly in children, the elderly, and anyone with a compromised immune system. Anyone want to start a home-grown bean exchange? Click here for the full story. Event Spotlights Since October is Vegetarian Awareness Month, we thought maybe we'd go ahead and make you aware of some great veggie-centric events. Make sure to keep these in mind while being mindful of your vegetable intake. Walk for Farm Animals in cities across the US in celebration of World Farm Animals Day, October 1. Walks will take place on various days throughout the month, so don't forget to check and see when a walk will happen in your city. Sponsored by Farm Sanctuary, the walks help build awareness of the plight of farm animals.Californians have the opportunity to get a measure on the November 2008 ballot that would outlaw the use of cruel cages on farm animals like egg-laying hens, veal calves, and breeding pigs. Kick-off meetings and signature-gathering

rallies will be held throughout the state to gain support for the measure, which will propose the abolition of barbaric battery cages, veal crates, and gestation crates. Both Wayne Pacelle of The Humane Society of the United States and Gene Baur of Farm Sanctuary will be in attendance. Meetings will be held October 1–5. Contact Humane California for full details. If you happen to be in downtown Los Angeles, why not head over and check out Art Murmur Gallery's current exhibition entitled "Animal-Esque." The show highlights works from three artists—Airom Bleicher, Jim Holyoak, and Alex Schaefer—who, through their various pieces, examine the relationship between humans and animals. Ten percent of the proceeds from this show will be donated to The International Fund for Animal Welfare and Amazon Watch. The exhibition closes October 27. So

you're already a vegetarian, great. Now how's about going vegan? World Go Vegan Days are October 26–28, though of course, any time's a good time to go vegan. The official days are sponsored by In Defense of Animals, who suggests various methods of encouraging awareness of veganism such as hosting a dinner party, which is by far our favorite tactic here at VegNews. IDA is a treasure chest of information about why vegan is the way to go, so you'll have plenty of reasons at the ready when people ask about your newfound awesomeness, er, vegan status. And don't forget to carve your organic pumpkins! We Won!The VegNews team recently received some good news in the form of a Golden Ozzie Award for Best Table of Contents in a consumer magazine! The prestigious design awards and their editorial counterparts, the Eddies, are given out by Folio Magazine, a publishing industry resource. Our winning entry came from our May+June 2007 issue, Green Goes Global. The stark white and blurred motion of a London transportation depot set the tone for

the fast-paced issue which featured in-depth looks at 10 green, urban hotspots. Special recognition goes to our super-savvy Art Director, Sutton Long, who keeps all our issues looking mighty fine, as well as our ultra-fab Managing Editor, Aurelia d'Andrea, who actually found the photo. Click here to purchase the May+June issue Restaurant Rundown As if being vegan weren't reward enough in itself, there are a few new reasons to love our lifestyle. We are talking, of course, about the slew new vegetarian restaurants opening all

around the country. From Brooklyn to the Bay (well, okay, Napa), vegan eateries are growing in number by the minute. Time to start making good use of those vacation days and planning a dining destination! On the list of places to try, please add the following:Café Blossom is set to open on Manhattan's Upper West Side, a complementary location to Blossom's already highly-acclaimed Chelsea restaurant. With many of Blossom's signature menu items—like their South Asian Lumpia, an irresistible blend of curried seitan and potato enveloped in a chickpea crepe—on offer, the new addition is sure to be a hit.Native Foods is expanding their Southern California empire with a new location in Aliso Viejo. The immensely popular restaurant already has spaces in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Westwood, and Costa Mesa. For their next move, might we suggest

San Francisco?Nutshell is brand spankin' new (as of August) to the already-bustling Portland, Ore., vegan restaurant scene. While you won't find any fake meat or tofu here, you will experience gourmet plant-based cuisine influenced by Africa, Hawaii, Argentina, and Jamaica.Discerning Brooklynites need never set foot on Manhattan soil again with the advent of 'Snice's new Brooklyn location. The edible and potable goodness that has made 'Snice a must-visit in the West Village includes their perfect tofu panini and soy mochas, complete with vegan marshmallows. Spiral Diner will eventually turn all of Texas vegan. What began in Fort Worth is now coming to Dallas, bringing delicious vegan fare to a whole new set of Texans. Look for the second location to open sometime this fall,

and get ready to get plenty.Always wanted to visit Akron, Ohio, but feared starvation in the Midwestern land of goat meat? Have no fear, VegiTerranean is (almost) here. Owned by rocker Chrissie Hynde, the restaurant will seriously improve the likelihood of enjoying your next family reunion in Akron. Make sure to look for a full review in the January+February issue of VegNews! And finally, Ubuntu, a restaurant and yoga studio combo has opened in Napa, Calif. With a strong emphasis on locally grown, biodynamic vegetables, their menu is 100 percent vegetarian and offers a number of vegan dishes. Recipe: Cholent

Could we be any happier that Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero have a new book coming out? Well, actually, yes, we can be and are because Isa has shared one of the 250 maw-watering recipes from their forthcoming Veganomicon: The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook with us! Here's how Isa describes this month's recipe, "Cholent is a Jewish beef stew that's typically served on the Sabbath. Here I use textured vegetable protein, kidney beans, and lentils to create a thick, full-bodied pot of stick-to-your-ribs yumminess. Caraway seeds give it the Eastern European flavor that sets it apart from your run-of-the-mill stew, so now would be a great time to add them to your spice rack arsenal. I like to

just crush crackers over the top and serve, but it's great with rice or bread, too."Make sure to check out our full review of Veganomicon in the January+February edition of VegNews! What You Need:2 tablespoons olive oil1 large onion, diced medium3 cloves garlic, minced1/2 teaspoon tarragon1 teaspoon caraway seeds1 teaspoon saltSeveral dashes fresh black pepper1/2 cup red cooking wine2 bay leaves1/2 cup french lentils1 cup peeled sliced carrots (about 1/2-inch thick)4 medium sized potatoes (about 1-1/4 pounds, peeled and cut into 3/4-inch chunks)1 15-ounce can tomato sauce3 cups water1 cup TVP chunks (not granules or crumbles)1 cup frozen lima beans (or canned and drained)—green peas are fine if you hate lima beans, hater1 15-ounce can kidney beans, drained and rinsed What You Do:1. Few costumes are complete without a face full of frightening features, achieved by shellacking on enough layers of makeup to repaint the Golden Gate Bridge. Whether you're joining the KISS army for the evening or making yourself into one of the living dead, chances are that at the end of the night you'll want to go back to being yourself, before all that makeup comes into contact with your pillow. A nice, vegan, organic cleanser is just the thing, and derma-E's Organic Expressions Facial Cleanser does a great job. The cleanser foams up without being overly bubbly, has a

fresh, citrusy scent, and leaves your face gunk-free. Appropriate for everday use and suitable for all skin types, we trust this cleanser to make sure that the morning after Halloween doesn't greet you with a zitty fright. From retail giants selling stylish vegan designs to today's hottest, young, animal-friendly designers to a fascinating exposé on animal fabrics and their 21st-century counterparts (bamboo blouses, anyone?), this issue is flying off newsstands everywhere.Last month we asked you to tell us about your favorite vegan fashion finds. Responses varied from high-end Stella McCartney ankle boots to a hat made of woven pieces of plastic shopping bags, and just about everything in between. Of the many recycled-item-related entries, it was this response from Danielle Devine of New York City that won the Escama pull-tab purse. She wrote:Lately, my cruelty-free fashion obsession has been thrift-store shopping. My favorite store is Housing Works, a chain of thrift-stores in Manhattan that donates proceeds towards fighting HIV/AIDS. At Housing Works, I can find unusual

cruelty-free fashions that not only help recycle goods, but simultaneously support a great cause. The stores are kept extremely neat as well, making shopping a pleasure!Kudos to Danielle for her conscientious spending. The combination of buying animal-free, recycled goods while helping a non-profit that works to combat the AIDS/HIV epidemic and homelessness is pretty perfect in our book.
