Having trouble viewing this email? Dear kerri,We are pleased to announce that thanks in large part to the letters PETA supporters have been sending to York councillors for months, councillors in York have voted nearly unanimously in favour of opposing the sale of foie gras.Ducks and geese raised for foie gras are abused in ways that would be illegal if dogs or cats were the victims. Foie gras (French for "fatty liver") is produced by ramming pipes down the throats of ducks and geese and force-feeding them until their livers become painfully diseased and enlarged and, in some cases, their organs rupture. The motion, tabled by compassionate councillor Paul Blanchard, means the delicacy of despair is now banned from the council's premises. The council will write to hotels and restaurants in

the city to inform them how it feels about the cruelty involved in foie gras production. York will also be the first city in the UK to call for a nationwide ban on the sale of foie gras on cruelty grounds. Paul Blanchard originally wanted York to follow the lead of Chicago and pass a total prohibition on the sale of foie gras in the city, but that ban was not permitted to go forward. The alternative motion stated: "This council believes that this intolerably cruel and painful practice is unnecessary and should end.The city of Chicago, USA, has shown tremendous compassionate leadership in their brave decision to ban foie gras in its shops and restaurants. The torture of small innocent animals should not be a matter of personal dietary choice." The council's chief executive will now write to Lord Rooker, the minister for sustainable food and farming and animal health, to relay the council's concerns

about the sale of foie gras in the UK and to request a review of central government policies on animal welfare issues. What You Can Do Take action by writing to Lord Rooker about foie gras. Following a meeting with PETA, Harvey Nichols stated that it will no longer sell foie gras in its stores once it sells out its existing stock. Makro has made the same commitment. Waitrose, Sainsbury's and all other major supermarket chains refuse to carry the cruel product. Despite this and despite several meetings between PETA and Selfridges executives, the retailer has refused to stop selling this delicacy of despair. Take

action by writing to Selfridges. Support our vital work by making an online donation, and help ensure we have many more successes like this in the future.
