For decades, the federal government has bailed out the meat and dairy industry at the expense of both children's health and animals. Whenever meat or cheese prices fall, the government buys up millions of dollars' worth of these products and sends them to schools for their breakfast and lunch programs as well as other food programs. As a result, kids continue to gain weight and have a higher risk for diabetes and heart disease, and the meat and dairy industry continues to get rich. We now have a chance to change things. The Farm Bill, which includes the blueprints for agricultural subsidies and food-assistance programs, is about to come up for renewal. Certain helpful amendments will be proposed that would cut subsidies for unhealthful, cruel foods like meat and dairy products and would include more vegetables and fruits in nutrition programs. What You Can Do Call your U.S. senators immediately and ask that they support reforms that will benefit children's health instead of the meat and dairy industry. Visit the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine's (PCRM) Web site for easy talking points as well as the phone numbers of your senators.
