Maria Daines, who campaigns for animal rights said she wrote the poem in memory of Thomas, a turkey rescued by Mary Alice Pollard, Cornwall's Voice For Animals. Maria, patron of CVFA.UK, realised, after spending time at the sanctuary where Thomas lived, that Turkeys are sensitive creatures and Thomas had his own personality and enjoyed being around people. Sadly Thomas passed away earlier this year of natural causes but he had a wonderful life living with his companion Thumbelina, for many years. Maria is hoping her poem might encourage people to consider the

plight of Turkeys and the cruelty involved in the mass slaughter to supply the Christmas market. For Thomas and Friends I'm a turkey not long for this life Think of me as you prepare the knife I do feel pain but I have no voice Will you eat me soon? Will you make that choice? Will your family tear me limb from limb? Little children break my wings? Pull stuffing from my roasted ribs? Save chunks of me inside your fridge? Will millions chew and suck the bones? The unseen holocaust in your homes Will everyone say

'what a feast!' And never know I matter least. Will nobody remember me? As I join you round the Christmas tree I love to peck and be at peace At Christmas time I am simply meat. I am breast or brown and crispy, baked I am the corpse upon your plate I was raised in squalor with millions more
