This Amendment suspends agricultural production of cloned animals until concerns about animal welfare, public safety and fiscal repercussions are thoroughly assessed. As Farm Bill managers, Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) can attach the Mikulski-Specter Amendment in the Manager's package that goes to the Senate floor. Please encourage Senators Harkin and Chambliss to include the Mikulski-Specter Amendment in the Manager's package for the 2007 Farm Bill. Your action is vital before FDA ultimately codifies or lifts its present moratorium on food from cloned animals. Along with two-thirds of Americans, I firmly oppose goods from cloned animals and their offspring. FDA's prior conclusion that clones are identical to food from authentic livestock wholly discounts the well-being of human and nonhuman animals. In fact, last December's assessment was widely denounced for its flaws and deficiencies. Still, FDA appears ready to approve cloned animal products without labels. Peer-reviewed studies show animals suffer from deadly congenital defects. Clones are commonly malformed with intestinal blockages, diabetes, contracted tendons, misshapen feet, and diminished immune systems. They have malfunctioning hearts, brains, livers and kidneys. Some live with respiratory ailments or circulatory disorders. Stillbirths and premature deaths account for substantial cloning failures. On average, 95% of cloning attempts are unsuccessful. Moreover, the dairy industry found no consumer advantage to cloning and expressed apprehension about its negative impact on small farmers and U.S. trade. Clones are banned in Denmark and under close scrutiny in the European Union. In truth, "cloned foods" repel many consumers. One industry survey reveals 62% are disinclined to purchase goods processed from cloned animals. Congress must weigh impacts on food safety, environment, domestic/global economies, ethics, and animal welfare before FDA allows cloned animals on the market. Please advocate passage of the Mikulski-Specter Amendment #3524 in the Farm Bill and ask Senators Harkin and Chambliss to include it in their Manager's package. Thank you, =========================================================== 2. SAMPLE LETTER: To Senate Ag Committee Sample letters are prepared to give you ample background on an issue.
