The Senate Will Vote the Week of Dec. 10 Call and E-mail Your Senators Today! Dear Ms. Morin, Why are celebrities like Alicia Silverstone, Bill Maher, and Kevin Nealon involved in reforming the Farm Bill? Like many PCRM members, they know that Farm Bill subsides contribute to childhood obesity and other diet-related illnesses—and they want to help change this important piece of legislation for the better. On behalf of PCRM, actress Alicia Silverstone left voice mail messages for several thousand people, asking them to

call their senators about the Lugar-Lautenberg Amendment (FRESH Amendment), which would reduce federal subsidies that fund foods high in fat, cholesterol, and sugar. You can read more about Alicia’s phone call on E! Online and Politico. Bill Maher, host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher sent this letter about the Farm Bill (PDF) to Sen. Tom Harkin. His letter was covered in The Hill, an important daily congressional newspaper. Kevin Nealon, star of Showtime’s Weeds,

also sent a letter to Sen. Harkin, which was covered in Roll Call, another important congressional newspaper. I’ve just received word from Capitol Hill that the Senate will finally vote on the Farm Bill during the week of December 10. That means your senators need to hear from you today! Like Alicia Silverstone, Bill Maher, and Kevin Nealon, you too can let Congress know that the Farm Bill must

be reformed to support healthy food choices for all Americans. Here’s how you can help: Even if you have already done so, please call your senators today and ask them to vote for the Lugar-Lautenberg Amendment (S. 2228), which would reduce federal subsidies that fund foods high in fat, cholesterol, and sugar. Then, send a follow-up e-mail.Forward this e-mail to all of your friends and family and ask them to call or e-mail their senators. Currently, more than 80 percent of Farm Bill food production subsidies support meat, sugar, oil, dairy products, and animal feed, and the Farm Bill does little to support fruit and vegetable farmers, who receive less than 0.5 percent of subsidies. The Lugar-Lautenberg Amendment would reduce subsidies overall, which means less support for meat and cruel factory farms and more money for nutrition programs.
