on Wednesday, December 12, 2007By Rucks Russell 11 News A controversy is brewing at Columbus High School over the treatment of ababy raccoon. "They started stepping and stomping on it, joking they're tenderizingthe animal," Police Chief Danny Jackson. "They skinned that raccoon, cooked it and ate it." Some have described the incident, which occurred in October, as blatantanimal cruelty. It happened during a wildlife management class in which students wereencouraged to harvest and prep wildlife to be cooked out back andconsumed. "From what I understand, they bring the animals in dead. But these twodidn't. They brought it in alive," Jackson said. APJackson says they then beat the animal to death in front of stunnedclassmates. According to the superintendent, it wasn't

supposed to happen thatway. He said a substitute teacher was in the class that day and simply didn'tknow any better. "And with the substitute teacher there, they in essence had permissionto process the animal there. Regrettably that happened. It won't happen again," Superintendent RandyHoyer said. Animal Cruelty 101?Was killing the raccoon animal cruelty?Yes!No!View ResultsThose assurances come too late for the students who witnessed theact. Their complaints led police and wildlife officials toinvestigate. But 11 News has learned there will be no criminal charges against thetwo students involved because most of the witnesses have said the animaldied quickly. "And so the suffering was minimal," Jackson said. Whether it was cruel or just an unfortunate mistake depends on

who youask. "Basically everybody knows how to skin something, what's the differencebetween a raccoon and a squirrel," student Charles Palachic said. "It was animal cruelty," student Stephanie Zavala said. The class is apparently part of a tradition at the school, wherestudents learn how to prepare food in the wild, should they ever needto.===========================See AOL's top rated recipes and easy ways to stay in shape for winter.http://www.chooseveg.com/meet-your-meat.asp"There is no religion without love, and people may talk as much as they like about their religion, but if it does not teach them to be good and kind to other animals as well as humans, it is all a sham." -- Anna Sewell
