Guest guest
Carriage horses lead a miserable, exhausting and dangerous existence. They pull heavy carriages for 18 hours a day, often without food and little water. They work in extreme heat and cold and whether or not they are sick. They have objects thrown at them and are often struck by bicycles and cars. We can help them. See below and take action. Thank you. You don't have to be from NYC to comment on this!! As NYC relies so heavily on tourism - and all the business people who go to NYC all the time for work -- let's help inform Mayor Bloomberg and the City Council that Councilman Avella is RIGHT on this. Just think - if this can happen in NYC, Philly or Dallas could be the next to go carriage-free. Any city or town that has carriage horses dragging tourists around on dangerous roads, in deadly summer heat and treacherous winter conditions, will benefit from a ground-breaking decision in NYC -- so it benefits us all to support this. Here's the contact info: City Council: http://council. nyc.gov/html/ members/members. shtml Scroll past the little form, and see each council member by name. Click each name, and go to the resulting page and note their PHONE numbers and MAILING addresses - don't waste time on emails, they'll just be ignored or deleted. Make CALLS and send LETTERS. Be sure to THANK Councilman Avella. He'll be bolstered by your support and can use the statistics on calls in favor of this to help make his argument in council: Councilman Avella District Office Address 38-50 Bell Blvd. Suite C Bayside, New York 11361 District Office Phone 718-747-2137 CONTACT THE MAYOR & DEPUTY MAYOR: Mayor Bloomberg: Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg City Hall New York, NY 10007 Phone: 212-NEW-YORK FAX (212) 788-2460 Deputy Mayor, Patricia Harris: City Hall New York, NY 10007 Phone: (212) 788-3000 FAX (212) 788-2460 You can also use the above address and phone number (212-788-3000) to reach Linda Gibbs, in charge of Health & Human Services, and Daniel Doctoroff, who's the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development. Let them all know that a GROWING number of people who travel to NYC for work and entertainment are very concerned about the carriage horses, and that it would be a wise and compassionate choice for NYC to make - and that Bloomberg's sense that the horses and carriages "define" the city is wrong - he should want the city defined by its CHOICES to stop suffering and prevent deadly accidents. Hasn't NYC seen enough suffering? His city has the chance to set a whole new standard - and that's a chance the Mayor and City Council should not let pass them by. Thanks.
