Network Dear kerri, Please join PETA in a special push for phone calls to support New York City Council Member Tony Avella's groundbreaking legislation that would ban horse-drawn carriages in the city. Elected officials need to know that the public cares about this issue! Please watch this short clip from Blinders, a new documentary that exposes the cruelty and danger of the horse-drawn carriage industry, and we know that you'll want to take action to ensure that this abusive industry is finally abolished. What You Can DoPlease

call the elected officials of New York City today and urge them to support Introduction 658/2007, humane legislation to ban horse-drawn carriages. The call will only take a moment! NYC residents: Please call your council member's district office and urge him or her to support and cosponsor Int. 658/2007. Tell him or her to protect horses and the public by banning horse-drawn carriages. Nonresidents: Please call Mayor Michael Bloomberg at 212-NEW-YORK and urge him to support the ban. Let him know that when you visit New York City, you hate to see horses suffer in the congested city traffic. Ask that he not wait for another deadly incident to act—the time to ban this cruel industry is now. New York City's

horse-drawn carriages are subject to very little regulation by agencies that have proved to be incapable of the task. In addition, the horse-drawn carriage industry does the following: Forces horses to work in extreme weather conditions Poses a public safety hazard since horses "spook" easily and cause accidents Causes horses to suffer debilitating hoof and leg ailments Forces horses to breathe in toxic exhaust fumes that can result in lung damage Every year, the list of incidents involving horse-drawn carriages grows longer. Additional rules and monitoring will not make a difference in the lives of these at-risk and dispirited animals. The only humane solution is a permanent ban. Want to Do More?Sign PETA's
