275,000 baby harp seals have been sentenced to die this year. They will be blugeoned to death in their nurseries on the ice with hakapiks, many will be dragged along the ice with boats hooks through their flesh and for 42%, they will literally be skinned alive. Many will not even had their first solid meal or taken their first swim. All this suffering and death for nothing more than vanity - the fur trade.According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the annual Seal hunt "is the

largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet". The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is predicting that this will be the "biggest seal hunt in 50 years". When describing the annual Canadian Seal hunt, the Atlantic Canadian Anti-Sealing Coalition points out, "it

is the only hunt that targets specifically the infant of a species." Furthermore, The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society states that, "about 95% of the seals to be slaughtered are babies less than four weeks old". The methods for killing the seals include kicking, beating on the head with clubs or hakapiks, or being shot. According to HARPSEAL.ORG's website, "The facts show that about 40% of

the seals are actually skinned alive". The driving force behind the brutal Seal hunt is economics. However, "the connection between the commercial fishing industry and the seal hunt in Canada gives consumers all over the world the power to end this cruel and brutal slaughter", as noted on HSUS's 'Protect Seals' website. Since Red Lobster is one of the largest

buyers of Canadian seafood, demonstrations are being held at select restaurant locations across North America this month. Activist groups in Houston are joining in this boycott campaign by holding a peaceful, educational demonstration in front of the Red Lobster in NW Houston next week! Details are below.
