Apparently, a caged pit bull escaped and bit the arm of Severino's 8-year-old son Nick. Enrique drove the child to the hospital for what police described as a non-serious wound. Meanwhile, an enraged Severino bored at least 12 holes into the dog "Baby's" head with a power drill. The

three-year-old pit bull -- chained and unable to escape throughout the ordeal -- did not die swiftly. She was later euthanized. Both brothers were booked on animal cruelty charges. Baby had shared squalid conditions with another four-month old puppy, who animal control seized and placed for adoption. Both dogs were severely underfed, according to police. Animal mutilation and mistreatment demand your utmost attention. I respectfully urge a significant sentence, upon conviction, that contains a permanent criminal record and anger management counseling. Both men ought to incur maximum jail time and fines for their respective charges of felony or misdemeanor animal cruelty. Please assure the Cruz brothers are barred from possessing, working, or living with animals. Lastly, convicted animal abusers should not fulfill community service orders at an animal shelter, where they're exposed to vulnerable animals and

youthful volunteers. Violence against animals is a well-documented precursor to violence against humans -- particularly more defenseless victims such as children, women or the elderly. In fact, animal cruelty investigations often uncover domestic violence or other signs of a troubled family, P. Arkow notes in Breaking the cycles of violence: A guide to multi-disciplinary interventions. ASPCA's Randall Lockwood, Ph.D. claims severity and intimacy of injury inflicted -- stabbing, mutilating, strangling -- suggest the potential for recurring violence against others. Drilling holes into the head of an animal certainly qualifies as torture and should be viewed as yardstick to measure probability of a repeat offense. Thank you for holding animal abusers accountable for their crimes of violence.
