Get Active for Animals!

Every year, millions of animals are maimed and killed to test cosmetics, pesticides, drugs, and a variety of other products. Even more are raised for inane purposes like dissection, cloning, and xenotransplantation. In an effort to draw attention to the plight of animals used in research, in 1986 World Week for Animals in Laboratories was developed. Since then, AAVS has encouraged its members and supporters to take advantage of this time to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.Click here to read an article reprinted from the Summer 2007 issue of our AV Magazine to find an assortment of ideas of how you can get active for animals.

AAVS Celebrates 125 Years of Speaking Out for Animals

AAVS is celebrating a milestone this year. Founded in 1883, AAVS was the first American organization dedicated to ending vivisection, and so has been speaking out for animals in laboratories for 125 years. We honored this anniversary with special activities to look back at the progress we've made and the challenges that lie ahead.

On the evening of April 5, AAVS friends and supporters from near and far joined us for our 125th Anniversary Celebration Dinner, and it was a memorable event. Eminent philosopher Tom Regan delivered a lively keynote speech, and Shirley McGreal, founder of the International Primate Protection League, was presented with the Caroline Earle White Award, named for our founder. In addition, AAVS was presented with official citations from the City of Philadelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, commemorating AAVS's 125 years of contributions to social progress. We also screened a short film, The American Anti-Vivisection Society: 125 Years for the Animals, documenting our origins and how we live our legacy. To cap the evening, a performance by the impressive Anna Crusis Women's Choir was sweetly harmonious and at times humorous. Guests enjoyed a lovely vegan dinner and an extraordinary celebration cake, specially created for us by the exceptional bakers at Vegan Treats of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The following day provided a rare opportunity for both animal advocates and history buffs alike, with a panel discussion titled, "Speaking Up for Animals' Rights—A Historical Perspective." Speakers included panel chair Bernard Unti, Ph.D., Senior Policy Adviser and Special Assistant to the President, Humane Society of the United States; Craig Buettinger, Ph.D., Professor of History, Jacksonville University; and Susan Finsen, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy, California State University—San Bernardino. Held at the National Constitution Center, the panel was both informative and engaging, with lots of audience questions. The talks addressed the historical struggle to end vivisection, featuring our pioneering founder Caroline Earle White, and related present day issues to historical roots.

AAVS wishes to thank all those who attended our 125th Anniversary Celebration Weekend events, and to thank all those who have supported our mission through the years.Click here to view the film, The American Anti-Vivisection Society: 125 Years for the Animals.

What's in the News?

ICCVAM Slow to Validate New Alternatives

Since its inception over ten years ago, the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Validation of Alternative Methods (ICCVAM), has only validated six alternative methods and recommended them for use to the scientific community. In contrast, the European Centre for the Evaluation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM), which was only created a few years before, has validated nearly five times as many alternatives, 13 of which have already met regulatory acceptance. ICCVAM’s review and validation process has been cumbersome and slow, and now a recent e-mail leaked to the Washington Post reveals that the committee is indeed resistant to newer tests.

Taiwanese Group Creates Virtual Guinea Pig

A government-run laboratory in Taiwan, the National Applied Research Laboratory, has developed a database of guinea pigs that would allow researchers to point and click their way through the animals’ biology. Researchers simply enter parameters for drugs and animals into the database, and the system projects the interaction between the two. If successful, the virtual guinea pig could replace live guinea pigs in drug studies, saving millions of animal lives.
