Guest guest
In an astonishing policy reversal, three major meat and dairy industry trade groups now support a total ban on the slaughter of crippled cows. As well, the head of a union representing food inspectors told Congress that the USDA tried to intimidate him and others into not reporting violations of regulations. The California ballot initiative is proceeding well. Check out this Monterey Herald profile on one of the campaign volunteers. The current Urner Barry newsletter, an industry trade publication, asserts on page 8 that the U.S. egg industry in 2007 saw the "largest single year decline in per-capita consumption in the last 10 years. Expectations for 2008 per-capita consumption are for levels to once again be historically low." There’s been a lot of press on in vitro meat lately.
