Two Chained Dog Cases-Two Cheerless Outcomes

Ohio- Nearly nine months after a judge allowed a dog to be returned to a man accused of its abuse, animal welfare activists say that the dog, China remains in deplorable conditions. After two year old, China was found with a chain so deeply imbedded in its neck, that required surgery to remove, Judge Robert Lyons allowed Otis Clark to keep his dog ordering Clark to read a book on how to care for dogs, to take his dog to a vet, to not to tie up his dog, and to reimburse the Humane Society for costs it incurred.

The Butler County Humane Society reported Tuesday that China has been found dirty, wet and living outside without a pen, which could be in violation of terms set out by the judge. Clark also failed to license China or take her to a veterinarian, as directed by the court. If he is found to have violated the terms of his probation, Clark must forfeit the dog and would face up to 180 days in jail. Authorities have not said whether charges would be filed.

Minneapolis - Zachary King Sr. raised his fists in the air Friday as an emotional Hennepin County District Court Judge Kevin Burke declared him not guilty of second-degree manslaughter in the death of his son "Zack Jr" who died from a pit bull attack in the family home last August. Once again, the fact that the dog was tethered in the basement was completely ignored and the court system focused on the dog's breed.

A male Pit Bull was tethered in the basement where a female and pups were also kept. The tragedy occurred with the loss of a 7 year old boy's life when he went downstairs to play with the puppies and was attacked by the tethered male Pit Bull in his basement.

It was reported that King raised the Pit Bull's to sell for profit.

Billboard Grant from Attorneys for Animals

Dogs Deserve Better received a grant from Attorneys for Animals, a non-profit Michigan organization of legal professionals dedicated to animals and animal rights. The grant which is to be used in Kalamazoo County, Michigan will pay for the costs of a billboard urging people not to chain their dogs.

Attorneys for Animals believes that animals have a purpose of their own and inherent value beyond mere personal property. As attorneys and other legal professionals, we seek to work within the legal system so that animals are recognized and protected as individual sentient beings by combining advocacy, litigation, and legislative efforts with education, by demanding enforcement of existing laws, and by making funds available to organizations working on various projects to advance animal protection and rights.
