public consciousness. This year, we’ve already published nearly 600 letters to the editor on 9 timely topics in nearly 200 newspapers. The topics included new year resolutions, Martin Luther King, lent, USDA meat recall, Meatout, Earth Day, world hunger, factory farming, and Oprah going vegan. Letters to the editor are the second most read section of the newspaper after the front page. They are a most effective vehicle for bringing our message to millions of middle Americans that we don't reach in other ways. To learn more about Letters from FARM, visit our website. Meatout Mondays Boasts 15,000 Subscribers Circulation of FARM’s free, colorful weekly e-mail newsletter has been growing by leaps and bounds. Our mailing service confirms their interest before starting their free subscription. Check out a recent issue, then sign up your friends, associates, relatives. Other News Oprah Winfrey decided to go vegan for 21 days for both ethical and health reasons and encouraged others to join her. Her announcement created a massive media buzz, raising awareness about the benefits of veganism to millions. She maintains a daily blog of her diet, commenting on delicious vegan food and providing recipes. According to the American Dietetic Association, 11 percent of girls ages 13 - 17 identify themselves as vegetarian or vegan - the fastest growing segment of the vegetarian population. That compares favorably with 7 percent of adult females who don't eat meat. Last month, the prestigious Pew Charitable Trusts and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health concluded that factory farming takes a big toll on human health and the environment, undermines rural economic stability, and fails to provide humane treatment of livestock. Capping a two-year study, with agriculture industry participation, the report calls for phase-out of all intensive confinement of farmed animals. Some of FARM's Favorite Links FARM Heroes Here we feature key supporters of FARM and the animal rights movement. Doug Moss is the founder/publisher of E/Environmental Magazine. In 1980, he co-founded the now defunct Animals Agenda, for many years the animal rights movement's main publication. He has been a devoted supporter of FARM and his magazine is a co-sponsor of the AR2008 National Conference. Becky

Robinson is the President of Alley Cat Allies and has worked in the animal protection field for 23 years. For more than a decade, Alley Cat Allies has advocated Trap-Neuter-Return - the most humane and effective method to reduce feral cat populations. Becky speaks at AR2008.
