Feral Cats on San Nicolas Island Urgently Need Your Help

The U.S. Fish Wildlife Service (FWS) has developed a cruel plan to eradicate as many as 200 feral cats using leghold traps and hunters with dogs. Your written feedback to the Fish Wildlife Service

is vitally needed by the June 17 deadline.

Feral cat populations have been recorded on the U.S. Navy-owned San Nicolas Island (off the coast of southern California) for more than 50 years. However, the U.S. Fish Wildlife Service now plans to use leghold traps and hunters to wipe out the cats.

According to the FWS plan, dogs would be used to flush out the harder-to-catch cats — so that hunters can then shoot them. Additionally, in accordance with the plan, the cats could remain in the leghold traps for 14–15 hours (overnight) after capture. Purportedly, these cats will be killed in an effort to protect Brandt’s Cormorants, western gulls, the western snowy plover, the island night lizard, and the deer

mouse.

The FWS’s inhumane and ill-advised plan will result in the needless suffering and cruel deaths of the Island’s feral cats. With your help, we hope to avert this tragedy.

Become a Pet Shop Investigator This Summer

Few people realize that by shopping at a store that sells animals they may be supporting an industry that exploits animals for financial gain. The fact is, in a retail environment

animals must be treated like commodities in order for the store to realize a profit.

Animals are living, feeling beings, and Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute believes they should not be treated like mere merchandise.

You can help protect animals sold in pet shops by taking the time to investigate the conditions at your local pet shop and by reporting poor conditions and abuse to your local humane law enforcement.

The in-store care of animals in pet shops is always suspect because store managers are often faced with conflicting responsibilities of caring for animals, even when the animals are sick, and making a store profitable.

Find out what you can do today to help protect animals in pet shops in your area by clicking here.

Victory for Wildlife, Companion Animals, and Children

Rodent poisons restricted

In Spring 2007 we asked you to urge the EPA to restrict the use of inhumane rat poisons that pose serious risks to wildlife, children, and companion animals. Concerned citizens like you sent 7,000 comments to the EPA.

Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute is pleased to report that on May 29, 2008 the EPA imposed new restrictions that will reduce accidental poisonings and hopefully inspire individuals to seek out more humane ways to deal with unwanted rodents.

Thanks to all of you who helped achieve this live-saving victory for wildlife, companion animals, and children!
