to:http://pets.concernedcitizensforjenny/ABOUT CONCERNED CITIZENS FOR JENNYWe are an independent, grass-roots group of concerned Dallas Metroplex citizens and we fighting to

save Jenny, the Dallas Zoo's lone African Elephant, from being transferred

to a Mexican Safari Drive-Through Display Park (Africam), where her life

will be miserable. We want the best for Jenny and that means sending

her to a USDA-approved elephant sanctuary, where she will have vast

open space, natural conditions, and the company of other female African

elephants. Jenny has served the citizens of Dallas for twenty-two years. We owe it to her to allow her to retire in peace and in the company of

other elephants at the The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. Jenny should not have to endure a sad, lonely, and miserable existence in a Drive-Though Display Park in Mexico for the rest of her life. HERE ARE THE FACTS

* No USDA or U.S. Animal Welfare or Anti-Cruelty Laws will protect Jenny in Mexico. There are no or Public Records Laws in Mexico either so we will not be able to keep track of her.

* It makes no sense to send Jenny to Mexico when she can be sent to a

U.S. elephant sanctuary that offers far more space and where she will

be protected under U.S. animal laws. The Dallas Zoo admits that it did

not even investigate the sanctuary option.

* The Dallas Zoo claims it is sending Jenny to a Mexican display park

because of its Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accreditation.

AZA accreditation does not guarantee Jenny's well-being. AZA is only a

trade association, with minimal and voluntary standards. Accreditation

does not equal independent oversight or guarantee that Jenny will be

treated well. USDA regularly inspects AZA zoos and often cites or fines

them for violations of federal Animal Welfare Act law, demonstrating

that even AZA zoos require independent oversight.

* At the Mexican display park, Jenny will be isolated from other female elephants, as Jenny is African and the other elephants there are Asian. These two species of elephants can not be mixed due to behavioral differences and risk of the spread of disease. Keeping a female

elephant in isolation is cruel due to her intense need for the society

of her own kind.

* Exposing Jenny to cars in a drive-through display park will create

great stress for her. Her veterinary records show that she is upset by

noise and negative changes in her environment. Jenny is a very sweet girl and has demonstrated through-out her life that she will not harm anyone who is not harming her. But, she will likely view a bus load after bus load of tourists driving straight at her as stressful (wouldn't you?) and harmful. If so, she may very well end up being shot.

* The Safari Park will give Jenny less than 2% of the space she could

have at The Elephant Sanctuary (http://www.elephants.com/) has accepted

Jenny into its 2,700 acre state-of- the-art refuge, the largest natural habitat in the

world, where she will have the company of other female African elephants. The Elephant Sanctuary does not display elephants. Jenny will be able to retire in peace.

* All reputable zoos are list their elephants at least one of the two elephant registries. Africam Safari Display Park is in neither, despite 30 yrs displaying elephants. We know nothing about any elephant who has ever lived or died there. Such will be the case with Jenny, also.
