Vegan World Radio- episode # 4 : 28 July 2008

Elephants Deserve Better

Hope for Elephants: Sanctuaries

Today we learn about the plight of elephants, gentle giants who suffer world wide at the hands of humans. Animal advocates are protesting the Dallas Zoo's decision to send Jenny, an African elephant, to a drive through tourist attraction in Mexico after spending 22 years of her life at the Dallas zoo. Margaret Morin with Concerned Citizens for Jenny will bring us this story. In Defense of Animals' (IDA) elephant expert Catherine Doyle will join us in this discussion. IDA has expressed outrage over the Dallas Zoo's decision. Nicole G. Paquette, Esq.

Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Born Free USA united with Animal

Protection Institute will discuss her organization's David versus Goliath battle against Ringling Bros. and Barnum &

Bailey circus for its mistreatment of Asian elephants in violation of

the U.S. Endangered Species Act. All that and more on Vegan World Radio! today.

TAKE ACTION FOR JENNY: Contact the Dallas Mayor

Repeatedly and politely call, fax, and email the mayor. If his office tells you to call the Zoo, courteously advise that you urge the mayor to intervene to send Jenny to The Elephant Sanctuary. And, that you do not want to call the Zoo. The Zoo will not change its plan unless the mayor insists.

CONTACT THE DALLAS MAYOR

We must convince the Mayor and the City Council to send Jenny to The Elephant Sanctuary instead of Mexico. Please keep calling them until they do the right thing by Jenny. If they tell you to call the Zoo instead, please tell our elected representatives that we want the City to make the decision.

The City and the Citizens of Dallas own Jenny, not the Zoo.

Whether of not you live in Dallas, making a polite phone call to the Mayor is the most important thing you can do.

In Defense of Animals (IDA) Expresses Outrage Over Dallas Zoo Elephant Decision

IDA Stunned That Zoo Will Export Elephant Jenny To Mexico, Away From Protection Of U.S. Laws

"We're shocked and appalled that the Dallas Zoo is moving Jenny out of

the country to a facility where she is not protected by U.S. animal

welfare and anti-cruelty laws," said Doyle. "The Elephant Sanctuary in

Tennessee was ready to accept Jenny. There is no reason to send Jenny

out of the country when a world-class facility so nearby offered to

take her."read letter at: http://www.idausa.org/news/currentnews/nr_080626.html
