Contact the Dallas Mayor Repeatedly and politely call, fax, and email the mayor. If his office tells you to call the Zoo, courteously advise that you urge the mayor to intervene to send Jenny to The Elephant Sanctuary. And, that you do not want to call the Zoo. The Zoo will not change its plan unless the mayor insists. Urge Dallas City Council to send Jenny to The Elephant Sanctuary. Demand a Public Hearing for Jenny before the Dallas City Council If you live in Dallas, contact your city council person and urge her or him to send Jenny to The Elephant Sanctuary. Also, politely demand a public hearing on Jenny’s plight. Contact your city council person at: (214) 670-5111 Or go to: http://www.dallascityhall.com/government/government.html 3. Distribute this flier to everyone in your neighborhood! CCFJ KEY TALKING POINTS: - Jenny is a fragile, high-risk elephant who needs special care, yet the Dallas Zoo plans to send her to one of the most inappropriate places possible for this elephant. - It is just wrong to send Jenny to a drive-through tourist attraction, where she will be exposed to the same conditions (noise and motorized vehicles) that have triggered her violent and aberrant behaviors (self-mutilation) in the past.- The zoo¹s decision to send Jenny to Mexico has everything to do with zoo politics and nothing to do with her long-term well-being. - Once she leaves the country, Jenny will lose the protection of U.S. animal welfare law and anti-cruelty laws.- Zoo accreditation is not enough to protect Jenny¹s well-being in Mexico, where there is no independent oversight and lax or non-existent animal welfare controls.- Africam (the drive-thru tourist attraction) would give Jenny less than 2 percent of the space she would have at The Elephant Sanctuary, which offers 300 acres for African elephants.- CCFJ is calling on the City of Dallas to intervene and send Jenny to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, where she will get the special care she needs. - City Hall has received many hundreds of phone calls and thousands of emails from Dallas and around the world in support of sending Jenny to The Elephant Sanctuary. It is time for City Hall to sit up and listen! - The Citizens of Dallas own Jenny and should have a say in where she lives. Support Points:- The stress of a drive-through tourist attraction can traumatize Jenny and cause her to revert to dangerous and self-destructive behaviors.- Jenny has a history of severely aberrant behaviors, including self-mutilation and aggression, triggered by loud sounds and vehicles. - The Dallas Zoo has tranquilized Jenny for prolonged periods of time and as recently as May, 2008, demonstrating that her problems are not a thing of the past. - The AZA is nothing more than an industry trade association. Its standards are weak and compliance is voluntary. - The USDA has cited and fined AZA zoos for abusing elephants, demonstrating the need for independent oversight. - The facility in Mexico is not listed with any reputable elephant registry, despite more than thirty years of maintaining elephants. We know nothing about any elephant that lived or died there. - The Elephant Sanctuary (TES) is recognized world-wide for its expertise in caring for elephants, including those with difficult histories. It will provide the quiet and stable environment that Jenny needs. For more information on TES, go to: www.elephants.com/
