Guest guest
Please attend Dallas City Council Wednesday at 2 PM to hear more on the formal protest that has been filed with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to block the export of Jenny to Mexico. This protest was filed today by a prominent attorney on behalf of Concerned Citizens for Jenny and himself. We believe that the application filed by the Dallas Zoo for the export permit of an African elephant is, at best, misleading and woefully wanting for justification. The application on the whole presents a picture of a thinly veiled excuse to get rid of a problematic elephant. In addition, the contract between the Zoo and Africam absolves Africam of all responsibility for Jenny and this is particularly objectionable. Even if Africam and/or its employees act in a totally negligent and/or reckless manner and that results in Jenny¢s injury or death, the Dallas Zoo has assured that absolutely no claim can be lodged against the facility. This clause becomes even more important considering it will be Africam and its employees who will be solely responsible for trucking Jenny the 1000 miles from Dallas to Mexico. The Elephant Sanctuary (TES), with its 300-acre natural habitat, three other African elephants, and expertise in healing traumatized elephants, is the right place for Jenny. The sanctuary is accredited by The Association of Sanctuaries and is licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Several AZA - accredited zoos have already sent elephants to TES. There is no legitimate reason that the Dallas Zoo should not do the same. Jenny deserves to retire from display. If this happens, she could have a happy and long life ahead of her. I hope everyone who possibly can comes to the City Council tomorrow at 2 PM. This will not be the City Council Chambers, but the smaller City Council briefing room on the 6th floor. Please continue to telephone and write the mayor and do it daily, if at all possible. Jenny needs your calls and letters.
