Dear Juli,

Thanks for taking action last week and telling Dr. Susan Lark not to sacrifice deep sea sharks for the sake of beauty. You and more than 8,200 other WaveMakers made it clear that you wouldn't stand by as squalane from shark liver oil was touted as the prized ingredient of various cosmetics.

You may have received a response from one of Dr. Lark's customer service reps, saying that the sharks were caught as bycatch in orange roughy fisheries. The email states, "When the fishermen pull up the nets, often half of their catch is the sharks…It is virtually impossible for the commercial fishing industry to catch orange roughy any other way."Dr. Lark's people are certainly right about that! To catch orange roughy, heavy trawl gear is pulled over seamounts - underwater mountains teeming with fish, deep sea corals, and large sponges - scooping up everything in its path. This dirty fishing practice has decimated the populations of orange roughy, deep sea sharks and other species while damaging corals that are thousands of years old. That's why virtually all "safe seafood guides" beg consumers to avoid eating orange roughy altogether.By selling this product, Dr. Lark is providing financial support to this extremely damaging industry. The worst part is that if Dr. Lark truly believes that squalane is a beauty magic potion, she could find it in several botanic sources including rice bran, wheat germ, amaranth seed and olives. The oceans would be a healthier place without orange roughy fisheries and the cosmetics industry would be a better place without squalane from sharks and its misinformed advocates. Please don't let Dr. Lark hide behind a canned email response. Tell five friends and family members to take action now and really turn up the heat on Dr. Lark.

Tell Dr. Lark she ought to leave deep-sea sharks alone. The health - and beauty - of our oceans depends on it.
