Guest guest
Sadly, it has come to my attention that a couple of misguided individuals plan a protest for Jenny in front of the Dallas Mayor's house under the guise of "caroling." I urged those involved NOT to do this, as it will cause serious harm to Jenny's cause. Concerned Citizens for Jenny has won many thousands if not millions of advocates for Jenny's retirement to The Elephant Sanctuary. To the greatest extent, advocates have been won because retiring Jenny is the right thing to do. But, we also won many to Jenny's cause by behaving reasonably and rationally and by conducting ourselves in a way that created empathy and respect. Protesting/Caroling at the mayor's house makes Jenny supporters look bad. It will make Dallas citizens to think about how they would not want "protesters" in front of their own homes. It will seem like an invasion of privacy and it allows the Dallas mayor to caste himself in the role of martyr. Do we really want to give him that? We know we can not win the mayor to Jenny's side, but we can win the hearts and minds of the rank and file of Dallas. Such poor behavior endangers our ability to do that. Jenny supporters must not lose the moral high ground, which we seized early in this battle and have kept by having right on our side AND by consistently conducting ourselves well. This ill-conceived stunt is already causing Jenny to lose many hard fought for friends at City Hall and in the media. See the reaction of Angela Hunt, our very best friend at City Hall ():http://angelahunt.com/I trust in the good judgment of Jenny advocates to understand this and not support any short-sighted tactic that does not further Jenny's cause. It is my hope that those involved will come to their senses and see that this action is harming Jenny's cause. Concerned Citizens for Jenny plans an important event after Christmas, so watch your email and please make every effort to participate. Jenny needs you there. Happy Holidays to all and please keep working to SAVE JENNY.Margaret MorinFounder, CCFJwww.concernedcitizensforjenny.net
Guest guest
I am cross-posting Don Feare, animal advocacy attorney at law and well regarded professor of law, to Vegetarian Network of Dallas, Concerned Citizens for Jenny, ACT, NTARN and other animal advocacy e-groups. See below. If ACT continues to pursue this caroling, if my email is published today (Friday), it is probably too late to present my plea to the rank and file of the animal community (except on those boards I moderate) not to participate, but I have to try . . . For Jenny's sake. A great deal of damage to Jenny's campaign has already been done in the media and at City Hall, but we could still head off any more damage if ACT will cancel this ill-conceived plan. Everyone makes mistakes, but it takes a mature animal advocate to admit and correct them in time. Thanks very much for your consideration. Any protesting at the Mayor’s residence can accomplish nothing but a negative response. First, if those planning this action were perhaps more aware of the long-fought battle for Jenny, they would know it is virtually impossible to change the Mayor’s position on the issue. So, exactly what is to be accomplished by protesting at his residence, other than getting those doing the protesting their 15 minutes of fame. Secondly, the battle has been fought on the basis of concerned citizens. There have been no animal rights or animal welfare levels to the battle. Now, those planning this assault will appear to be nothing more than a bunch of tree hugger, whale lovers and anti-government folks. Animal rights groups are already placed in that category all too often so don’t give the Mayor a chance to say “I told you so” that the battle for Jenny isn’t really about concerned citizens but radical animal rights groups. Finally, given that everyone involved with the Jenny battle knows the Mayor won’t change his position (he certainly won’t because a few protestors show up when he hasn’t over thousands of citizens raising the issue) so exactly what does this group of protestors think they are going to accomplish. It is my hope that they are simply uninformed or haven’t stopped to think whether they conduct will actually have a negative impact on the Jenny battle, rather than simply seeking publicity for themselves. If you don’t like what government is doing, either participate the process or take it into the courts. Protesting at a residence lets the resident win automatically. Protesting at city hall is perfectly acceptable. Why give the mayor a chance to be the reasonable one but the protestors are violating the law, invading privacy and come off looking like nothing more than radicals? Listen to Margaret folks, follow her lead and you can possibly have a positive impact for Jenny. Protest at the Mayor’s residence and you are assured of a negative one.
