Guest guest
The $30 million tax dollar funded elephant exhibit planned for completion in 2010 or 2011 will not meet the needs of elephants as elephants need to walk miles a day, not feet. Additionally, now two elephants will be forced to live in the antiquated 1/4 acre cell in which Jenny has been imprisoned for 22 years. I am completely amazed to learn Dallas City Council has approved a multi-million dollar expansion for its elephant exhibit at the zoo. Are you kidding me? When the Dallas budget deficit is going through the roof, the prudent thing to do is simply move Jenny, the lone elephant, to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. Now another elephant, Gypsy, has been brought in as a companion to Jenny. This means the space is divided even further, and there is more food and care to consider. I wish the Dallas City Council would explain this ludicrous move. It would have been so much better to just move Jenny to Tennessee. Why would you go out and bring in another elephants - knowing full well elephants are one of the most expensive animals to keep in a zoo? So in addition to wasting millions on an enclosure for 2-4 animals - we now have the added cost of caring for another elephant who will undoubtedly incur costly medical expenses thanks to all the health problems that are created by zoo conditions. Sigh. No wonder our country is in disarray and debt.
