JENNY NEEDS YOUR VOTE IN 2009 DALLAS CITY COUNCIL ELECTION! Vote Your Conscience on May 9th from 7 AM to 7 PM Find Your Voting District: http://www.dalcoelections.org/findprecinct.asp

As part of their overall plan for civic and fiscal responsibility, the following candidates support retiring Jenny to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee . Each of these candidates is well-qualified to serve on Dallas City Council. They have all spent years in public service to the citizens of Dallas .

PLACE NINE: JOHN M. YOURSE. Masters Prepared Teacher. Officerl in U.S. Armed Services (completes his service in May, 2009). Advocate of responsible and respectful environmental planning PLACE THIRTEEN: GEORGE "BRINT" RYAN. Successful Accountant. Business-Owner. Long time civic leader and philanthropist. Endorsed by the Dallas Morning News Here is why these candidates support Jenny’s retirement to The Elephant Sanctuary. Jenny’s Enclosure Does Not Meet Even Her Basic Needs. That’s Cruelty to Animals.

Jenny has spent the last 22 years eking out a miserable existence in a ¼ acre barren exhibit that even the Dallas Zoo admits is inadequate. Jenny suffers from maladies caused by restricted movement and standing a lifetime on a hard surface. 3 out of 4 elephants in zoos die from such maladies. Zoos do not have enough room to keep an elephant healthy. Many zoos are closing their elephant exhibits for this very reason.

The Exhibit the Zoo Plans to Build Will Not Give Jenny a Better Life. The Zoo plans to keep Jenny in the tiny enclosure until 2011, while they build an only modestly expanded exhibit that will not meet Jenny’s needs. Even when the new 3 ½ acre exhibit is completed, it will still be much too small for Jenny, not to mention the 5 other elephants that the Zoo intends purchase and cram into this small space. Elephants are meant to walk 30 to 120 miles a day, not just the few feet that they will have in the new exhibit. If Jenny was a dog or cat, she would have more protection. As it is, she has none.

The New Zoo Exhibit is a Waste of Tax Dollars. It Is Fiscally Responsible to Oppose It.

The new exhibit will cost 30 to 40 million in tax dollars. This is your money. In these tough economic times, $40 million dollars could significantly benefit Dallas citizens if it was instead spent on needed street repair, sanitation, neighborhood parks, libraries, after-school programs, and police and fire departments. Jenny could retire to the Elephant Sanctuary at NO COST to Dallas .

Jenny is Sick and Needs a Quiet Place to Rehabilitate and Heal. Jenny suffers from crippling depression and self-mutilates. She has Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, a serious illness. The only hope for Jenny to be restored to health is to retire to The Elephant Sanctuary, which specializes in treating and healing elephants like Jenny. Jenny can not get this needed treatment in any zoo.

In December, 2008, a valid study published in the journal Science found that zoos may be the least safe place in the world for elephants. The study of 4,500 elephants concluded that elephants in the wild live up to three times longer than in zoos, even though elephants in zoos live predator-free and receive regular veterinary care and food. If she stays at the Zoo, Jenny is doomed. Zoos are so hard on elephants, Jenny may live only couple of more years. But, Jenny could have many happy years of health if she transferred to The Elephant Sanctuary. The Elephant Sanctuary is 2,700 acre, state-of- the-art natural habitat refuge where Jenny would live with others of her species, as an elephant was meant to. She would have the best veterinary care and she would be able to choose her own companions and self-direct her own life. This is something all of us want, and deserve. We owe it to Jenny, and to ourselves.
