In the past 26 years, more than 30 governors have issued Meatout proclamations asking their citizens to explore a healthful nonviolent diet of vegetables, fruits, legumes, and grains on March 20th, the first day of spring. But when Michigan Governor Jennifer M. Granholm did that earlier this week, the Michigan Farm Bureau and other lobbyists for the state meat and dairy industries pounced. The Farm Bureau labeled the proclamation "unconscionable and insensitive." The state senate passed a resolution requesting the governor to rescind her Meatout proclamation. The process has generated a huge amount of publicity in Michigan that we are ready to exploit for the animals' benefit.
