Guest guest
Hi everyone, I wonder if you can help me to calculate the protein content of my vegetarian meals. Mornings are simple, I just measure the protein powder. But what do I do e.g. with my lunch. Yesterday night I prepared some rice salad with kidney beans, green beans, brown rice and a bit of goats cheese. I wrote all the ingredients down and got the calculator and calorie/protein counter out and did my math. What an effort! My question is when 100 g cooked beans amount to 7 g protein I'd have to eat at least 200 g beans. Does the brown rice add the remaining bit of protein, or does it count as a carbohydrate only. I added the cheese to be on the safe side . How would I go ahead without cheese? And is there a less tedious way to prepare vegetarian meals ( program friendly ones I mean)? I'm dying to read your answers! Take care everyone Yours Sabine
Guest guest
Hey Sabine In the beginning I used to measure everything, now I just " eyeball " it. My journal was of great help there. >My question is when 100 g cooked beans amount to 7 g protein I'd have >to eat at least 200 g beans. That doesn't sound so much to me, that's still less than 1 can (250 g). >Does the brown rice add the remaining >bit of protein, or does it count as a carbohydrate only. No, I don't count the protein in brown rice, I use it as a brown carbohydrate. If you eat it with beans (not necessarily in the same meal, just the same day) your body will extract from it the amino acids it needs to add to those from beans in order to make complete proteins. But it is a carb. >I added the cheese to be on the safe side . How would I go ahead >without cheese? Add some other source of protein: lentils, tofu, nuts, seeds... >And is there a less tedious way to prepare vegetarian meals ( program >friendly ones I mean)? As you know, I like cooking so for me preparing a meal is seldom tedious. <smile> I think of it as a great way to make friends with my body -- whom I was neglecting and abusing and ignoring for so many years. So now my body and I, we sit down and have a nice meal together, getting to know each other. And when you invite a friend to lunch or dinner, you want to cook something nice, don't you? I know you work long hours, but maybe you could explore some new meal ideas over the weekend and even make some nice meals in advance and freeze them and then use them during the week. Would that work for you? Hugs, Mika
Guest guest
Hi Sabine, No, I wouldn't count the protein in the rice. It's a brown, not a protein. To be honest, I counted quite a bit in the beginning. After a while, I've developed a *feel* for how much beans, etc. I need. I tend to use canned beans, so it's really easy to glance at the can to figure out the protein amounts. I also made a list I keep in my journal of how much food I need to get 22 grams of protein (my goal). So I can easily scan and see I need two cups of pinto beans, 3 oz. of cheddar cheese, etc. Most of the time though, I get my protein from a variety of sources. So I might have a cup of beans, an ounce of cheese, a hard boiled egg on my salad, etc. A good way to bump up your protein count is to have the ricotta delight dessert from SARP: 1/4 cup ricotta cheese 3 chopped almonds 3 chopped dried apricots 2 drops of vanilla extract Mix together and microwave for 30 seconds or so. Sprinkle with cinnamon and eat. Hope this helps! Hi Mika, It's good to hear that 1 can of beans is not to much. What a wonderful description! It really makes me think! And one thing is for sure: you bet that I'd serve you a better meal than I usually have.Probably even with candlelight! > I know you work long hours, but maybe you could explore some new meal > ideas over the weekend and even make some nice meals in advance and > freeze them and then use them during the week. > Would that work for you? > >Definitely ! Guest guest
Sabine, I love the image of candle light for dinner. You going to try that even if Mika isn’t over? <grin> Heather On Behalf Of sik151258 March 01, 2006 12:55 AM To: Re: protein content of meals --- In , mika <zachalian wrote: > > > That doesn't sound so much to me, that's still less than 1 can (250 g).
