Guest guest
I am organized! It's such a dramatic change from my pre-SARP life, I can still hardly believe it. I used to go to the grocery store every single day. There was actually a file posted on the old vegetarian group that was a permanent grocery list, and I downloaded that and modified it to match the layout of my grocery store. So to " make " my list, I print out the permanent list and use a highlighter to highlight the items I need to buy. Does that make sense? So I sit down on a Saturday or Sunday and pull out a little wall calendar I use and keep in the kitchen. I flip through my cookbooks and check what I have on hand and need to use up, and I plan out my menu for two weeks, and I write the meals onto the calendar, and if I pulled the recipe from a cookbook, I note that on the calendar too (so I don't have to remember where the recipe is). As I make the menu, I highlight the grocery list with the items I need. (I can also look back through the calendar for menu ideas.) Then I do my shopping. The whole process, including menu making and shopping, takes about an hour and a half, and then I'm set. When I get home in the evening, I check my calendar to see what I'm cooking, and I cook it. It's taken me a while to figure out what quantities of food last me two weeks. I buy three loaves of bread, for example, and put two in the freezer and pull them out as I need them. I also try to keep a well stocked pantry, so I can put together different meals if I need to. I keep lots of canned beans and canned tomatoes on hand, for example. I usually have about two dozen eggs in the fridge at a time. I don't like to run out of things. Although it takes some focus and commitment to make the menu and do the shopping, it's so worth it to have all the planning done. I don't have to think much about food outside of that small window of time. Hope this answers your question!
