Guest guest
I have a gardening book, New Junior Garden Book from Better Homes and Gardens. I like it because they show you how to do some fun and easy gardening projects. One of them is growing potatoes in a tub. I have copied the page here: You'll need: Knife, 2 or 3 potatoes, Newspapers, Medium-sized plastic trash can, 2 or 3 buckets of potting soil, 1/2 cup of dry garden fertilizer, 5 or 6 buckets of mulch (leaves, pine straw or hay) Potatoes grow underground, but they are not roots. They grow on the buried stems of potato plants. Potatoes are very easy to grow, even in a trash can full of leaves or compost! How you do it: 1. Use the knife to cut the potatoes in half. Let them dry on some newspaper indoors for two or three days. 2. Carefully cut five to six small holes in the bottom of the trash can. Find a sunny place outside for the trash can. 3. Mix the potting soil and fertilizer, then put the mixture in the trash can. Set the potatoe pieces on the potting soil. Cover them with about six inches of mulch. Water well. 4. Water once a week and check for new growth. 5. When the plants poke thru the mulch, add 6 more inches of mulch. Repeat this as the plants grow, so only a few leaves show at a time. As the plants grow upwards, potatoes form on the stems. When the plants reach the top of the trash can, water once a week until the plants start to turn yellow. Then gently tip the can over and roll out the potatoes that have grown in the mulch. You can cook them and eat them anyway you like! I really am anxious to try to grow them. I need to buy a plastic garbage can from the dollar store and I already saved a bag of leaves to use as mulch when I was raking leaves. Guest guest
Michelle, thanks so much for this!!! How great! Did you know there is a gardening list here, too? It's all play, no program talk, but we talk about stuff just like this Heather on behalf of Michelle Hilliker Tue 5/23/2006 3:21 PM Heather, about growing potatoes...
