Hi!

I am newly vegetarian and am trying to educate myself on how I can

get enough protein at each meal. I have no idea how to cook Tofu--or

if I'll even like it--but I'm willing to try.

I'm looking for some quick, easy meal suggestions and protein

substitutes I can bring with me when I go to a party or barbecue where

meat is the only thing being served.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Caryn, first up check out the protein list on the files section. It has just

about every good protein source under the sun. That should give you an idea of

all the great options vegetarians have.

Tofu can be used in a ton of ways, but my favorite way is to buy a flavored

kind, slice it up and just fry it :). there's one (I don't know the brand) that

is a peanut ginger flavor that is just fantastic.

If you are going to a party or a bbq you can bring a lentil or a bean dish to

take with you. I will try to dig up some recipes this weekend, I have a few

favorites in mind.

Hi Heather!

Thanks for the reply. Not sure what the "files section" is, but I'll snoop around the site and see if I find something that will fit the bill. Thank you, also, for looking up some recipes for me.

Do you carry protein powder with you wherever you go? I've thought about that, though I don't think it would taste great in a vegetable sandwich, for instance. :) I'm just trying to think of ways that I can easily incorporate protein into a meal I am served when I am away from home.

Thanks,

Caryn

Hi Caryn,

The " files section " is in the site. So if

you log into the page, and go to the

Radiant Vegetarians group pages, there's a files

section.

When you are talking about being away from home, do

you mean going to restaurants, or do you mean like

visiting friends or relatives?

I think visiting friends and relatives is its whole

own topic, and come to think of it, I don't know that

we've talked about it much in this group.

Probably one of the big things that's changed for me

since starting this program is that I now PREFER to

stay at a hotel vs. staying with friends or relatives.

It gives me a lot more control over my eating times (I

can eat as soon as I wake up, I can eat lunch or

dinner BEFORE going to someone's house for visiting,

etc.).

I do travel with a jar of peanut butter and some

sugar-free wheat crackers, in case of emergency. :-)

But I do mean that I do that when I travel, not on a

day-to-day basis at home. At home, I typically know

exactly what I'm eating and where and when.

Tell us more about your specific situation!

Bright blessings,

Sharon

Caryn,

I like to carry little premeasured

baggies of protein powder with me in case I need it. Also, I will often carry a bottle, like

a Nalgene bottle, with premeasured

protein powder and babyoats in it. I have no problem mixing this with just

water and drinking it and it is an easy and quick way to get protein.

Stacey,

I get herb tea to start my day at Starbucks. I ask for an extra Extra Tall

Plastic Cup, then I

put my protein powder in, have Starbucks add water, stir, and add ice. Then I

walk out

with a blazing hot cup in one hand and a freezing cold cup in the other, strange

but funny

feeling.

You need to share your Trail Mix Recipe with the Group. I'm sure you do

something

different.

Bob,

I am laughing at the thought of your hot

and cold mornings. I think you need a

brown with that – how about some crackers?

I know I have posted my Trail Mix recipe,

but I can’t remember where. I will

try to remember to get it out this weekend and post it here. It is really easy and really great to carry

around.

Bob, I think you're the first " hot and cold " two-fisted drinker I've

Or maybe it's " hot and cold running Yogi " ???

Stacey,

My car is like the brown section of the supermarket. I have triscuits, shredded

wheat,

etc... all in stock in my back section. There are lots of earthquakes where I

live, so these

are my survival browns.

Also for some crazy reason I keep looking for those Maria's Gone Crackers.

Think I'll buy a

case if I ever find them...............................

Smiling too.

Hey Bob,It might help if you looked for Mary's Gone Crackers... not Maria's, although I agree with you, technically one and the same, but hey, sometimes the mind's eye skips over what doesn't look right.  Maybe they're so darn popular, your store runs out all the time? <smile>LucindaOn Jun 23, 2006, at 10:33 PM, Bob wrote:Stacey,My car is like the brown section of the supermarket. I found them in Whole Foods Market. I've been down the Cracker Isle many times

before.

The problem was that they were right at my eye level, did not expect to see them

right in

front of me. Well we bought a box of the origional and my family likes them

too, what a

Big Hit. Thank you everyone.
