Guest guest
Hi Beth, That sounds good but I would use steel cut oats instead of regular because of the better tasting flavor and texture. Good luck, and let me know how it turns out. Brett Sanders, Beth Manchester <pumpkingirl71 wrote: I am thinking of making chai spice oatmeal in my slow cooker for mother's day brunch. Anyone offer any advice? The current plan is to boil chai spices mix, strain it, and add the liquid to my crock pot with oatmeal and sweetner. I might try splenda because my mom is diabetic. Should I do the normal ratio of water to oats or more ore less? Thanks, Beth
Guest guest
i don't know why soymilk doesn't work as well, but i've seen that as well when my mother microwaves quick oatmeal with it. like someone on the list said, it's really good to make oatmeal with water and then add some soymilk afterward. michele Music Unlimited - Access over 1 million songs. Guest guest
Good Morning, I have alway's liked Oatmeal. For some reason, it alway's tastes better with the picture of " The Quaker Guy " , Pictured On The Box, for me. I've found The Quaker Oats product to be apx $1.80/#. Even at Whole Foods (one of the most expensive places to shop U.S.) you can get the Bulk Oats for $.40-$.80/#. I get the bulk oats and put it in The Quaker Oats Box... I've also found Steal Cut Irish Oats to be apx $3.00/#, how much different can these be? I always feel better eating the Regular Old Fashion Oats (Long Cooking Time), it works for my body. The Instant Oats (Cooks in apx 1 min) are ok. I've heard that some people mix in baby oats into their shake and this works well. What type of Oatmeal do you prefer, please feel free to share, would love to hear your fav?????? Bob
Guest guest
Bob, i'm a big oatmeal fan, too. I get regular rolled oats from the bulks section of my local organic market. Works well for me, and it's like 70 cents a pound . Both my husband and I have oats in our shakes so we go through it pretty quickly. I really like the texture of steel cut oats, but I can't eat that on a week day because it takes too long to cook. I'll have it sometimes on a weekend, but I have to start it cooking right when I wake up so I can have brekkie on time . The texture is so nice and chewy, it's a neat change. heather on behalf of Bob Sun 7/2/2006 9:56 AM Oatmeal Good Morning, I have alway's liked Oatmeal. Guest guest
Mornin', Bob, I just finished a bowl of old fashioned rolled oats. I eat them uncooked, with soy/almond milk (I mix them). I think raw oats are yummy but the quick ones don't work well for this at all, feels like chewing on soggy paper, LOL. I do use quick oats in my shake sometimes though. I used to love muesli (raw oats with nuts and dried fruit) but the commercial kind has too much dried fruit in it for me now (dates, etc.) so I do a stripped-down muesli with raw oats from the bulk bin and throw in a few chopped nuts or crumbled freeze dried strawberries (way less sugar than dates!!!) $.40-$.80/# vs probably at least $4.00/# for the ready-made muesli, too! :-) To my mind muesli = granola, but without the oil and especially without the part where I have to bake it, LOL. I love your idea of putting the bulk oats in the Box With The Guy On It! Val , " Bob " <yogabob7 wrote: > > Good Morning, > > I have alway's liked Oatmeal. Guest guest
Heather, when I've been on a steel-cut oats jag, I'll cook a big batch some morning when I have time (or in the evening) and then reheat portions in the morning. Usually have to add a bit more water for texture but it's worked out well for me! You're right, waiting for steel cut oats to cook isn't always consistent with " breakfast within the hour! Guest guest
Val, That sounds really good. I also add nuts (sliced almonds) to my oatmeal as well as protein powder. I've never purchased freeze dried strawberries, have to try it soon. Have An Awesome Day, Bob , " Val " <vjlawren wrote: > > Mornin', Bob, I just finished a bowl of old fashioned rolled oats. Guest guest
Kathleen, I'm not suprized that Bulk Oats are $.30/# in NM and $.40/# in CA, a 25% higher differential. Another advantage to NM......... Guest guest
Heather, I like chewy texture, combined with crunch, I'll breakdown and try the most expensive box/can of Steel Cut Oats I can find and see if I like it. I'll give you a report.... Smile, Bob , " Butler, Heather " <hbutler wrote: > > Bob, i'm a big oatmeal fan, too. I get regular rolled oats from the bulks section of my local organic market. Guest guest
Thanks for the tip, Val! I know some people cook a big batch in their crock pot, too, I haven't gotten around to doing that experiment yet heather on behalf of Val Sun 7/2/2006 10:41 AM Re: Oatmeal Heather, when I've been on a steel-cut oats jag, I'll cook a big batch some morning when I have time (or in the evening) and then reheat portions in the morning. Guest guest
Bob, you crack me up with the Quaker guy. I like steel cut oats. I buy it in the bulk section at the coop here or Whole Foods, and it costs about 79 cents a pound. I like it because it is firmer and less gooey than rolled oats. I like to add blueberries to oatmeal, it's great when they get warm in the oatmeal. I've been lazy and having Ezekiel toast lately instead. I keep telling myself oatmeal would probably be cheaper. And I'll have to try the cottage cheese and oatmeal, now that I'm living in Albuquerque I can eat cheese without sinus headaches.
