lentil frustration

Hi, everyone. And a warm welcome to our two newest members!

I have tried to make lentils several times, and they are just turning

out gross every time. Does anyone know how to cook them successfully?

I have tried doing what my cookbooks say, and have looked at several

online recipes and instructions as well. The weird thing is that they

all recommend something different?! Different amounts of water,

different cooking times, etc. I've never quite encountered such

variation in cooking instructions before.

I don't want to do anything fancy. No soup or casserole or anything

like that. Just cook a pot of them so I can have them with quinoa and

a little dressing or something.

Mainly, they are turning out grossly mushy, or undercooked with water

leftover, or a mixture, with some in the same pan being mushy and some

being crunchy.

If any of you have had success with cooking simple lentils, I'd love to

hear from you.

Thank you!

Lis

Hi Lis,

There are so many different kinds of lentils, they all cook at

different rates. The quickest are the red lentils, they are usually

split, I always cook these mushy, or even add a bit to soup to

become broth.

I talked to a chef and she said she finally got her rice+lentil dish

to work out by cooking them seperately for the first part of cooking

and then combining them later.

Old lentils will not cook right, same for beans, they stay crunchy.

If there is not enough water the ones on top will get crunchy.

Perhaps you can cook them with the more water and then drain them

rather than let the water absorb. More like cooking beans.

best of luck,

maybe I'll make some lentils again! Thanks,

Marina
