Well, I am going to SFO next month - my long-time favorite place is Greens. I

know there are a lot of newer and funkier places. Would love some suggestions.

I will begin the Boston list, and will ask my daughters (Orange County, Santa

Rosa) to contribute their favorites. I think this is a great summer project - in

the name of research we need to travel and eat out a lot!! :)

Sharon, can you send the revised data base so I get the format right the first

time? Also, can there be a way we can add comments (e.g. cleanliness, service,

quality) Thanks!

Also, a question to the group: how do we want to handle chains? For example,

Legal Seafoods (Eastern Seaboard) has pretty much the same menu at all

locations, with at least one vegan option (I checked last night when I went to

dinner there, and although the sauce contains sugar, it can be made without

sugar upon request.) It seems like a duplication of effort to list each link in

the chain, when this info is easily available from the company's own web site

(often with driving directions). Any ideas? (I am SO not a tech person, I have

not a clue how to do this!)

Okay, I made some revisions to the database I have going, if you want to check

it out. I got the price range there by moving the highway info to the street

address field, as Gail suggested.

I'm putting the highway info even when the restaurant isn't necessarily close to

the highway, just to help people orient themselves when travelling. There will

be restaurants in the San Diego list that are an hour from each other, and I

think knowing the highway and exit are a big help. It's different in smaller

areas, though.

I'm sorry, I know nothing about data bases, so why are we limited again? One

idea is that the address can contain cross street or highway exit (in the east

most of the good restaurants are NOT near highways!), so that wouldn't have to

be a separate item perhaps.

Sharon Wylie wrote: The only trick is that we're limited to 10 " fields, " so if

we want to add something, we have to take something away.

We can change " sit down or take out " to " ambiance. " I think we should add " zip

code " to the " street address " line since a zip code will help anyone searching

on mapquest.

So if you want credit cards and price range, which fields would you want to

remove?

Oh, and which credit cards they take! Some restaurants do not accept AmEx; other

teeny cafes take only cash - it's good to be prepared!

The databases can't be sent. They're just part of our page here

(need to be signed into ):

http://health./database

I created three blank tables, so all you have to do is click " edit " for one of

them, change the name of the table to the city you want to start work on, and

then save the table. Then you can click on the table name to open it, and then

start adding records. Let me know if that works to get you started, of if you

need more info.

I love Greens too, by the way. I've had two very magickal meals there, both

times their pre fixe dinners on Saturday night. So good.

Do we want to agree on any kind of guidelines for what qualifies to post?

Especially in the " links " section?

For example, I created a folder for " veg-friendly chains " and started adding

links. I thought about adding Subway sandwiches, but it's hard to get enough

protein there (I guess you can add lots of extra cheese). I eat there, but then

I supplement the protein with my own stuff. So to me, I don't really think it

should be listed if you have to supplement with your own food.

In contrast, I did add some Asian places because you can always ask for the

sugary sauce on the side.

And I would like the places we list to have brown options (besides beans since

for vegetarians, the beans need to be our protein). To me, finding good browns

is frequently the hardest part of restaurant eating.

I guess what I'm saying is, I think we should be listing restaurants and such

where you can get a solid RR meal (with veggie protein and browns) without

having to supplement from food you brought with you or bought someplace else.

BUT on the other hand...I'm in Southern California where there's a lot of

options. If I were on the road somewhere with few options, I might welcome a

place with tofu and bean options, even if there were few browns. Maybe we should

just use our own judgement depending on what area of the country we're providing

info on.

What do people think about this?

Yes, Sharon, that sounds about right. I too have trouble finding good browns.

Almost any vegetarian or Asian restaurant will have tofu, and you can always

find beans at Mexican. It's the browns that are difficult...

OK, I have a question. I noticed that a Thai restaurant is # one. My

understanding from all the Thai restaurants I have been in is that

this food is very high in sugar. These restaurants need to be program

friendly, OK? So can you review the list and make sure we have that

criteria as well. Thanks!

I agree that the listings need to be program friendly AND have had a personal

visit. I think a personal visit makes all the difference in the world. That's

the only way we'll truly be able to rely on our listings.

RE: Thai food, I'm sure it depends on the restaurant and recipes, but the Thai

food place I've listed in the San Diego restaurants has a variety of Thai curry

choices which are not made with sugar. I would not recommend any and all Thai

food restaurants in San Diego, but I do recommend the one I listed.

Maybe we should add to one of the columns a spot for the lister to identify

themselves, so people with questions can ask? We could put that with the

restaurant name.

Cheers,

OK, I have a question. I noticed that a Thai restaurant is # one. My

understanding from all the Thai restaurants I have been in is that

this food is very high in sugar. These restaurants need to be program

friendly, OK? So can you review the list and make sure we have that

criteria as well. Thanks!

With Thai restaurants I have found that they will often say no sugar and

forget that there are coverts. Coconut milk is often sweetened and some of

the other sauces added to curries can be sweetened including fish sauce.

I think this restaurant guide is a wonderful idea! Can I add

restaurants where I live (Sweden) or is it supposed to be only US

places?
