Hi,

I have been on the progam since the beginning of March 2008, well after

reading the YLD I felt this program would workm for me, however for the

past 5 years I had been a confirmed vegan. Anyway for the past month I

have been eating many animal products and I felt so guilty going

against my principles. So I will quit if I cannot return to practicing

the vegan lifestyle. Can you help me? I need 35 grams of protein 3

times a day. How can I do this? I really want to stay with the program.

Warmly,

Ellen

just saying a " welcome " Ellen

have to confess I have not any experience of the vegan lifestyle

myself.

but one thing Ive learned here is to do the steps gradually and not

try to think of the entire picture at once, it makes things easier,

so, in that vein, focusing on breakfast, do you have good breakfasts

worked out yet?

I aim for about 30g protein at breakfast and its easy for me to

choose a protien powder for this. What do you like?

For the past month I have been depending on eggs, eggs, eggs and oats,

however, now I'm moving to shakes. I am using soy from Trader Joe's and

sunflower

seeds plus some fruit and unsweetened soy milk, so far I'm doing ok the last

couple of days, I was having such pain in my hands with all the animal

products, I was getting desperate.

Thank you for your response.

Ellen

Hi Old Vegan

I can understand how it would be hard to changing your diet to values that don't

fit is not

going to make you want to continue this program!

I have been vegan for many years, except for a few when I was pregnant with my

4th child

and then nursing her, I craved animal products.. but then all of a sudden, it

stopped, and I

went back to being vegan, raw vegan. I have done a lot of research about food

and such

after becoming raw, and discovered that there are so many options most of us

don't

consider to have protien that do!

Sprouting seeds and nuts and grains increases their protien values

exponentially. There is

protien in greens too. Almost everything you eat has a little bit of protien in

it. How do

you think a big gorilla can eat a vegetarian diet and be so big and strong!!! (

no protien

powders for them!! )

Hemp seeds ( the shelled one called hemp nuts) have a spectacular nutrition

profile.

You can buy sprouted grain breads, either in fluffy loafs or in wraps styles, I

think they are

called Ezekiel bread ( and have a number after Ezekiel).

Beans, tofu, spirulina, and moderate amounts of processed 'meat substitutes' are

good,

tempeh.

A smoothy in the morning made from hemp seeds, greens, fruit and some water or

ice is a

great way to start the day!

You can make 'cheeses' from nuts and seeds, and pates too. Bean pates are great

to put

into a sandwich, think hummus and black bean dip.

Hope all this helps!! Hang in there, you will figure out a good balance for you!

Ellen,

Welcome! I have to echo Mosaic on my favorite and easiest breakfast. Two

scoops of Brown Rice Protein powder in almond milk with a bowl of oatmeal or

brown rice or something like that for the brown.

Many of the meals I eat are vegan, (Though not all of them because my body

just doesn't thrive on a complete vegan diet and that's the reality I've come

to.) Most of my protein sources are black beans, chick peas, soy products,

seitan, nuts and seeds, I know there's a mushroom thing that I don't eat often

called Quorn that's very high in protein. But like Mosaic said, all you have to

worry about is breakfast - and any of these options can be eaten for breakfast

as well.

Glad you're here!

Hi Ellen,

I see you've gotten some wonderful ideas. I'll just add nutritional

yeast and Sunshine burgers are great for protein.

I would also second Mosaic's feedback about the baby steps,

including going back to being vegan. I am not vegan, but

found that I felt better when I gradually reduced the amount

of animal products I ate rather than when I tried it too suddenly.

Hi Ellen,

I am new to the program and really appreciate everyone talking about other

sources of protein. Have you found a good guide for vegetarian protein? Has

anyone made a pocket guide to protein sources for vegetarians? I know that

eggs is on the one described on the RR lists but I was wondering if anyone

here has made a special one for the nondense sources? Thanks! Jessica

Hi Ellen, welcome

have you seen the Files? in the left hand blue box.

Click on Files and then look for Vegetarian Protein Sources. Heather

made a great list. I printed it out and keep it tucked in my journal

for when Im doing my beans!

Are you doing step 1? how is it going for you?

Hello,

Thanks! I went to files and that is a great list with protein values. It

will help me with my other meals to get on target with the protein. Glad

there is a vegetarian group.
