Guest guest
Hi all is there anyone who is dairy free here? I am certainly having to cut down on dairy after discussion on step 6 and Kathleen says to omit it for a week. I must have been having so much - for I 'm really struggling. Firstly there is shake - have tried rice milk (so sweet) soya (yuk) and there is oatmilk which doesn't really blow my hair back. I really like almond milk (brought a couple back from US) and over here it has sugar. I used to have 1/2 large pot of yog in my shake each morning. Most of my snacks were cheese strings and oat or rye crackers - quick tidy and easy. Having cashews now - not as filling as cheese. Used to have hot milk out and 2 tsp cocoa to make a nice substitute for coffee (also given that and wheat up) then I used to have a few spoons of yogurt after a meal with creme fraiche..... I 'm have some Alpro yog with something - and altho I don't esp like it I can get by. Will prob post on 6 and veggie list as well - sorry if you get it twice Be grateful for anyone else's input - thanks Binky
Guest guest
Binky, I've been dairy free for years. I do use almond milk in my shakes. I don't know how much of a cook you are, but I know that some people have actually made their own almond milk, and their own brown rice milk. I could dig up some recipes if you like. I've just lived so long without it it's hard to remember how I replace the taste. I know in indian dishes I sometimes add cashews to replace the fatty feeling of cheese. And there is soy butter and soy creamcheese that makes for a treat sometimes, but mostly I don't even miss it. I think my only advice is that you can baby step this too, just like sugar and your journal will be a huge help in figuring out what you can tolerate. Your little bits of yogurt in your dishes sound like a good idea. Make sure you keep getting enough protein. Let me know if you have more specific questions and good luck. I know it's new now, but it's very, very easy when you get the hang of it. And like the sugar, nowadays I don't even miss it. Jess CO Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Guest guest
Jess Thank you so much for this. I find it most reassuring! I have had tremendous support here. I was a bit worried as I have detoxed off sugar, wheat and coffee also in the last 3 months and didn't know how to manage another thing. I would really appreciate the recipes if you had a moment. I cannot get sf almond milk in the UK. I'm using coconut milk in my shake just now and that is nice (thanks Mosaic) I will see what is around in the soy substitutes - thanks. By the way - just wondering and I could be quite wrong - you are not the Jess that went to Maine in March are you? Binky > Binky, > > I've been dairy free for years. Guest guest
Okay, Here's a recipe for almond milk. (I use this one because it doesn't require cooking, LOL) It's not the most exciting taste in the world, but it makes a shake taste like something edible. Instead of protein powder in water. Sometimes I add a little vanilla flavoring from the RR store. Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 15 minutes Place 1 cup freshly roasted almonds in a glass jar. Cover with 4 cups water. Tightly close the jar. Refrigerate for 1 day or no more than 2 days. Pour into blender and blend until smooth. Strain liquid from pulp through cheesecloth, applying pressure to squeeze out all liquid. Retain the almond paste pulp to top cereals, vegetables or rice (1 pound shelled almonds = 3 cup halves for 4 cups slivered.) I got that one from about.com in the recipes section. The brown rice one I got from a woman in one of the budget classes, who got it from Cathe Olson,of the book Simply Natural Baby Food 1/2 cup brown rice 8 cups water 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup or more cold water 3 tablespoons maple syrup (I use about a teaspoon of the RR store vanilla or maple flavor) 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Place rice, 8 cups water and salt in a pot. Cover and bring to a boil over high heat, reduce heat to low and simmer 3 hours until rice is very soft. (Can do in a crockpot over night) In blender, puree rice with remaining ingredients (Will have to do this in 2 batches.) Puree each batch at least 2-3 minutes to liquefy the rice. Add more water if thinner consistency is desired. Keep refrigerated. Yield about 6 cups. Good luck! Jess CO Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Try it now. Guest guest
Sally, Hi! *waving back* I'm still adjusting after ranch. I said I would be back to normal by Saturday, but it's Sunday and I'm still tired. Hee hee. My body has it's own ideas of recovery time. The sun is out and it's almost 70 degrees for the first time this year where I live, so this is a good day to lounge on my porch with a good book. I hope you like the recipes or find something even easier that works! Jess CO Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Try it now. Guest guest
Oo- er yes it is - I totally missed it Mosaic! *tries to look observant* thank you so much for your help there. Jess - that looks great - I'm sure I can do something with that - thank you very much. Mosaic - do you have that recipe for wheat free wraps at all? I know you posted it recently - think you made them with gram flour? I would be most grateful - can't buy 'em anywhere!
