How to do the program/ Our focus on this list

I thought it would be an idea to reconnect to what our list is really

all about. Doing-the-food. The seven steps, how to do the program.

Sometimes we get so interested in vegetarian/vegan how-to's that we

forget to talk *steps* - well, I am easily distracted, LOL and I know

from experience that I need to keep my spotlight on the steps. Im

concerned that our focus doesnt get lost.

So I hope you'll join in... oldies and newbies, tell us about your

step.

Sharing this is so useful. It gets me attentive to what I am doing.

I am working step 7. I always pay a lot of attention to my own step

3. Very steady mealtimes.

Staying planned and prepared with snack in case a meal is delayed is

so important for me.

how about you?

What a cool idea, Mosaic!  I am also working on step 7.  I always pay close

attention to journaling.  I like to look back at what I've written becasue it

tells my history from a unique position.  At a basic level, I am reminded of

meals/foods that work or don't work for me.  Sometimes, I'll look back a few

months am think 'oh yea, I remember how much I liked that dish! " and will be

eating to a few days later.

At a deeper level, I can trace where wobbles came from.  If I read about a

cranky Karyn, I know to look back a few days to see if my timing was off or if I

ate something questionable.

The journal is such a powerful tool, I just love this step and see it as a

bridge connecting my past, present and furture selves.

Hi Mosaic

I'm currently working on step 3.  I've been struggling with it since February,

but with the help of the lovely people on the step 3 list, I'm starting to feel

like I've found a way to progress without rushing.  I recently tried jumping

straight in to eating the right amount of protein at both lunch and dinner, and

my body rebelled - she really didn't like all the cheese and beans I was trying

to feed her, and showed her unhappiness in no uncertain terms.  So I've decided

to start again, and go really really slow.  I'm currently focusing on finding

interesting lunches that I can experiment with to get enough protein.  Although

I have always loved cheese, and ever since I was a child my lunch has pretty

much been a cheese sandwich, it turns out my body doesn't like to have it

24/7.  I'm unused to beans, so I can't just start eating loads of them.  I

tried, and the results were, shall we say, explosive.  So now my focus is very

much on variety,

finding lots of things I can try, and hopefully rekindling my love of cooking

in the process.

I've always been convinced that step 3 would be where I started to feel a

difference, which I think is why I kept trying to rush at it.  Now I'm really

starting to enjoy the process of exploring, of gently trying new stuff, figuring

out what works, and you know, that in itself is making me feel different - I'm

optimistic and excited about the future.  And I no longer mind about how long

it's going to take.

Hi, everyone

I am working on Step 7, and revisiting Step 2 at the same time :)

Journaling is a challenge for me, always has been. And a couple years

ago, I experienced a significant personal crisis that led me far away

from the journal, myself, and from RR. But I have been able to pull

myself back and pick myself up for the most part, due largely to

following the program again :) It's been a long process, but I am glad

to be back.

So I have joined up with the folks at the Step 2 list and I am slowly

learning to love what the journal can offer.

And I joined this list again to support my decision to adopt a vegan

diet while doing the program. That decision was made for health

reasons, as well as personal choice.

There are some realities about began a vegan on this program (protein,

volume of food, for example) that can present a challenge, and I hope

that there will be an opportunity on this list to discuss that at some

point :)

If not, I look forward to discussing " doing the food " with everyone!

Warmly,

Nadine

Hi mosaic and all,

I am on step 7. I eat many vegetarian meals. After getting

really solid on the step, I decided to try eating more vegetarian

meals. Though it was a little tricky in the beginning figuring

out how many animal products I needed to stay stable, my

trusty journal was a big help. I've been able to eat less meat as the

year has gone by. When I was a vegan/vegetarian before doing

RR, my blood sugar and moods were all over the place. It's really

nice to have a balance of stability with eating in harmony with

my ethics. These wonderful steps are a framework for everything

else for me, whether it's eating more local food, more vegetarian

food or anything else. I'm always so grateful to have this structure

and knowledge.

I'm currently working step 7.

" workin' it! "

Anyway, I joined this list because I want to go off of red meat.

So far so good.

But i do have a question.

I'm still going to be eating chicken and turkey and wanted to know if this

clashes with the

guidelines of this list?

I also came over because i am getting more adventurous with veggies and wanted

to start

sharing some of that.

But again i want to make sure I'm not violating certain ideas here that have

been talked

about and implemented.

thanks,

John,

you are most welcome to be hear and learn about expanding what you eat

in the context of the program.

You simply won't need to discuss the sources of your animal protein

journal is a favourite of mine! What do you like best about

journalling?

I think thats an excellent point. In fact LOL its the main reason

that I joined Vegetarians in the first place, as I wanted reassurance

about how to manage my protein!

So yes, I would say its fine to discuss that. Trouble was with me,

because I have a long and colourful diet history, I got caught up in

thinking how to count....which distracted me from thinking my step.

At 32g for my protein grams I was devoting my energy into combining

proteins to get *The Number* and forgetting bits of the rest...

So thats part of why I need to remember why Step is important. And

you particularly reminded me of the importance of step 2 to enable me

to listen about journal giving me feedback ( having just dined on a

new dish of omelette and sunbdried tomato/butterbean salad) so thank

you!

what a marvellous encouraging post Jenny, inspiring. I hope you've

told step 3 list all that, I loved reading it - how you are listening

to everything your body says!

and 'the process of exploring' - wow, I am one who used to throw self

at everything at 100 miles an hour, so this made me smile. Good for

you!

Lovely to hear JoEllen

what a testament too, to the slow approach. thats taken me a long

time and I can still be a bit impatient! so encouraging to hear how

it works well when taking your time with it.

I rebelled against structure for a long ime but just what I needed!

I love the -previous blood sugar unstable -contrast to how it is now.

what a great story.

John, have a look at JoEllens post about slow changes, I thought it

was just gorgeous.

and adventures in vegetarian food has got to be a Good Thing!

I like to think this good exchange of ideas and sharing has to be

good as long as we respect how others feel, which is just exactly the

same as all the lists!

glad you arrived

Great topic, Mosaic!

I too am working step 7, and I usually put some of my focus on one

other step. Right now it's my favorite: step 1.

I love breakfast and am always happy to focus on it, LOL. I used

shake a lot early in my program. Then, after about a year I guess, it

wasn't holding me so well. So I went to more solid proteins with my

brown.

Recently I've been trying shake again. I make my own rice milk with

vanilla bean (yum!) and have been enjoying it. I need to tweak the

recipe because once again it's not holding me quite well enough. I

use Restore, grapeseed oil, and sometimes some flavoring. I like it

pretty plain. I also have a bowl of oatmeal on the side with nut or

seed butter.

I made a little discovery tonight at dinner which relates to

breakfast. Dinnertime came upon me so quickly I didn't have much time

to make a brown. So I cooked up some oats (which I have nearly every

morning). I decided to make them savory, so I added some crumbled

aged Gouda cheese and small cubes of tofu. Oh my, it was so tasty!!

A nice bowl of veg, and there was my dinner.

So this got me thinking about breakfast (you see how it's my

favorite?). Maybe I'll try alternating days of shake & oats with days

of savory oats with tofu & nuts. I always comes back to breakfast for

me, LOLOL! Cinzia

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to this-- busy week! :)

My favorite part of the journal? It's like having another person,

another set of eyes, looking at me, LOL! Even though I'm the one

writing in it, I often come up with small but significant insights

that add up to alot, and they are insights that I never saw without

the journal :)

Thanks for asking me this question, good to remember this!

Cheers,

thanks Nadine. Isnt it interesting, seems several of us are journal -

lovers! and often its a tricky thing. I like what you said about the

eyes, looking in! Myself, I was expert at writing in it for a long

time and not listening to what I was writing!

But keeping connected, it did dawn on me gradually.
