I was wondering if anyone here had any experience in cooking tempeh?  I bought

some and it's sitting in my cheese drawer eyeing me and daring me to cook

it LOL.  I have to admit I am a bit nervous since I have no idea what to do with

it.  I remember cooking it once a few years ago with disasterous results.  Any

suggestions?

Hi Heather-

I am a big tempeh fan but my recipe is always super simple. It might

not even taste good to people. I just chop it into little pieces and

saute it in olive oil. My friend Zeke the food guru has recommend

marinating it in balsamic or something like that but I've never tried.

I'll be interested to hear what you discover!

I brown it in olive oil and mix it with veggies.

Oh I am laughing, both you and Tina say such simple techniques! I was going to

get WAY to fancy, dusting it in chickpea flour and Indian spices and frying it

in coconut oil. No wonder I was scared to try it. Simple first...

Hi Heather,

I like tempeh reubens- heat it up somehow (fry or Foreman grill) and

put it on toasted whole grain bread with sauerkraut, mayo, cheese and

tomato paste (or ketchup if you eat that). I also add grilled onions.

Mmmmm, I love tempeh. I do fairly simple things like Tina &

Kathleen. I like to steam it for about 20 minutes to plump it up;

makes it more amenable to marinades and spices, I think.

Once steamed:

sometimes I crumble it into tomato sauce for a mock meat sauce.

Or cube it and put in Thai-style coconut curry.

Or slice/cube it, marinate in a soy-ginger-sesame sauce, then

broil/bake it.

Or slather it with some sauce I like (hot sauce, tahini-lemon sauce,

even tomato paste) and stick it in a sandwich.

Or saute it in oil with garlic.

I'm drooling now. And I want JoEllen's reuben! Cinzia

Wow Cinzia, I had no idea you could steam it first. Thanks so much for the

ideas!
