Guest guest
I had no idea how to use it as well... but just experimented with some sauces.. it has a very strong flavour I have found.. it took a little getting use to but by the 3rd bite my husband and I couldnt get enough of it! fry it in a heap of olive oil with a decent amount of plumb sauce marinade with a bit of tomato sauce as well... add also a little honey.. the sauce came out some what sticky on the tempeh and it reminded me of BBQ ribs... it tasted delicious prepared this way... we had it with mashed potato and a salad... hope this is some kind of help Rikki On 2001.08.08 21:53:40 +1000 gareth pashley wrote: > hi there... > new to the list and fairly new to veganism (around 3 months...). I also like to sautee it a bit in olive oil, let it cool and then mix it with Nayonaise, pecans, olives, celery and some garlic, it is kind of like a mock chicken salad. I wish that I could give exact measurements but I always make it different, it just depends on what you like. It has been a hit with vegans and meat eaters alike. The flavor and texture are nothing like tofu. i found tempeh to be a bit strong-flavored, something that's taking a little getting used to. good luck! ~cyd~ ______________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Guest guest
Laura : > They didn't have any pies just the usual stuff, but i > managed to get some tempeh which i don't know what to do with! I love tempeh. Especially the deep fried strips (also the Garlic and Coriander ones) as I can just munch them, straight from the packet or in sandwiches (Fresh & Wilds' VLT used to be Tempeh, Yeast Extract, Lettuce, Tomato from what I remember). Blocks of tempeh are really good, but are, to an extent, an acquired taste as they have a fairly unique mushroomy beany flavour. Fried strips with mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, 'tatoes and baked beans makes a pretty good full veggie breakfast. Roughly chopped lumps add a bit of texture / flavour / novelty to stews. If you're into pies, precooked veg, and tempeh lumps can make a fair pasty-alike. Add to a stir-fry just for the change etc. etc. Soy sauce makes it a lot more savoury, and a lot less mushroomy / beany. Steve W.

Guest guest
> Anyone have a good recipe for tempeh? Here's my favorite. It has a rich, sesame and paprika taste and is excellent with mashed potatoes. Tempeh Paprikas serves 6 2 tbsp toasted sesame oil 2 lg onions, chopped 2 tbsp. paprika 2 cups vegetable stock or water 2 tbsp. dark miso 1 pound tempeh, cut into 32 triangles 1 tsp. soy sauce 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar 4 tbsp tahini (sesame paste) Chopped scallions or parsley, for garnish Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat, and cook the onions and paprika, stirring, until the onions are golden, about 10 minutes. Bring 1 1/2 cups stock or water and the miso to a boil. Add the tempeh, lower the heat and simmer 30 to 45 minutes. Blend the soy sauce, vinegar, and tahini with the remaining 1/2 cup stock or water. Add this mixture to the skillet, stirring as it thickens. Do not let it boil. Garnish with scallions or parsley. Guest guest
Hi, I finally like tempeh now that I cook it teriyaki style. It has a sour bite, since it's fermented, but it will soak up any sauce like tofu. So I found a stir-fry recipe and now I love it. Any good garlic-ginger sauce recipe should do. Guest guest
I love tempeh- I fry it simply in olive oil, but I like it well fried and almost crispy, and I like a splash of Braggs or soy over it. If I am feeling extravagant I will add some grated ginger and garlic toward the end. I can buy marinated tempeh though so that helps- I just fry it and add Braggs on my plate. Guest guest
<<<Although, can I ask, what is Braggs? >>> http://bragg.com/products/la.html Braggs liquid aminos- a non fermented alternative to soy sauce, and absolutely delicious. Although no salt is added, it is quite salty, but has a particular flavour that it just yum. peela
Guest guest
Thanks Peela! I don't think I've ever seen it before. I'll take a look at the market next time to see if it's there.
