  • 2 years later...

Hi, I'm JJ, and I was radiant for 3 years, backslid for 1.5 and am back

since January starting step 5.

I have been vegetarian (with fish, is that pescitarian or something?)

before and love how I feel without meat. I am currently eating chicken,

turkey and fish/seafood, but the chicken is starting to gross me out so

I think I should start substituting it soon. I haven't had beef or pork

in years. I love beans, cheese, tempeh...but overly processed TVP and

Quorn and such tend to make me as sick as meat does - go figure.

Anyway, I have a question...if I am eating vegetarian 2 meals a day,

but not completely yet, would I still count all protein - like the

protein in brown rice and milk and such - for those two meals??

Thanks! I have been perusing around the group, and I love all the

wealth of information here!

JJ, welcome back to RR, I'm so glad you found us again.  I spent a long time

working my way towards vegetarianism, red meat was the first thing I cut out,

chicken was second.  Fish and seafood were the last to go (and the hardest).

What is Quorn, I don't think I've had that before?

Personally I don't count everything when eating vegetarian, I just count the

solid protein sources.  I find I feel steadier when I do that.  Use your journal

and you'll see what works for you :)

You can get Quorn products in the freezer section at the health food store. They

use it as a replacement to soy and make all kinds of meat substitutes with it,

mostly resembling chicken. It is made from mycoprotein, a fungus like mushrooms.

Some of them are really good - some get old fast.

Welome, JJ!

My body is similar to yours regarding processed soy (TVP or

other)...it would much rather have plain ole tofu than those soy " faux

meat " things. I used to eat those quite happily, but not any longer.

Not since around step 5 for me (I'm on step 7 now).

As for counting *all* protein, I generally don't. I count only dense

proteins -- like beans, tofu, tempeh, seitan (wheat gluten), cheese,

egg, sometimes nuts (for a few grams of protein). But that took some

investigating and use of my journal to figure out. I think it might

be different for different people.

It also took some experimenting to find how much brown I need

depending on the type of protein in the meal. I need less brown (say,

brown rice) with beans than I do with tofu. Early in the steps, it

didn't seem to matter so much to me. It was really when I was on step

5 that I paid attention to it.
