Guest guest
Hi Jennifer. I am certainly no expert, but most fish and seafood has very high levels of mercury, that is poisonous. This is not true of fish and seafoods caught in the very cold water of the arctic, though. My doctor wants me to eat fish because it is healthy, but I don't like it, so I take fish oil. I guess it is the polutants and mercury that are problems healthwise. Katie Jennifer <roughleyme wrote: Hi everyone, My name is Jennifer and I'm a new vegetarian. I omitted beef and pork from my diet about 6 months ago and am moving to the next phase. What I will miss the most is seafood. My primary reason for becoming vegetarian is for the animals. I'm a huge animal lover. I am a volunteer foster for an animal rescue group. I've been doing this for just over 5 years. I also want to adopt a more healthy lifestyle too so this is the perfect solution. For anyone who has done their research on the disadvantages of seafood please fill me in. I've done lots of research on factory farming but not on why seafood is harmful. I'm a member of PETA and USHS. Any insight you can provide would be great! To respond to Steph's email (mrswalp29) about quinoa. I just did my research on it and read that you just need to rinse it well to remove the bitterness. If you try that and then cook it that might work. Jennifer You snooze, you lose. Get messages ASAP with AutoCheck in the all-new Mail Beta. The way we obtain seafood these days is horrible for marine ecosystems. Here are some examples: * Shrimp are scraped up, destroying the sediments beneath them and driving their environments to destruction. * Cod, herring and other shoals have been decimated for decades now, to the point where their entire ecosystems have changed. There's little reason to believe they'll ever recover -- in other words, humans have changed these ecosystems forever by overharvesting. * Many species of shark are on the brink of extinction due to fishing these animals only for their fins, which are cut off the live fish --and the maimed sharks are then dumped overboard while still alive. I could give many more examples. Seafood harvesting is a uniformly devastating practice. Sea creatures are marvelous, and we're on the fast track to shuffle them off this mortal coil. I'll dig out some great faux tuna salad recipes I have that use kelp powder for a seafoody taste -- a delicious substitute for the harm we're doing to the oceans! I'll post that soon. Guest guest
Hi all, I'm new to this group and to the YLD site. I don't eat red meat and try to avoid chicken and turkey. I guess I'm a bit of a flexetarian . I've found that cheese seems to kick in some addiction issues (apparently it has some addictive qualities for some folks) so my only dairy is usually organic yogurt. And I hate to cook, so I love easy veggie recipes! Thanks, all, K
