Guest guest
I wanted to say Hi. Am new to this list. Am on step seven and ready to explore what it might look like to do the program and not eat so much animal protein. I would like to be eating more vegan meals and more Raw Living foods. I found the protein content list in the files section which will be useful. Thanks Want to make sure I'm taking baby steps with changes to my diet. So I'm thinking I need to look at protein sources. I need to eat 65g a day. I don't eat any dairy or soy and not many eggs so that leaves beans and nuts. I know there is protein in other things like grains - I eat rice and quinoa. So, one question is do you count that protein or should I count on the 65 grams coming from beans and nuts? Would like to start by eating one vegetarian meal each day and see how things go. I could put eggs back in my diet to help transition off of meat at every meal although I don't want to end up eating a lot of eggs <smile>. I think one of my concerns is not being able to eat enough food to make it from meal to meal without snacking. Oh well, will see, a great question " how much do I need to eat when it's a vegetarian meal? " I will note for myself that I want to be measuring things so I'm clear how much I'm eating. thanks -Ryl
Guest guest
Hi Ryl, Welcome! I am on step 7 too and have transitioned gradually to almost a vegetarian. I need about the same amount of protein you do. I do eat soy and eggs, though, and occasional fish. It's certainly possible to eat less meat, and what worked for me was doing it very gradually and paying attention to my journal. " Cranky " for me meant I was gong too fast. I'm not sure where you live, but foods that have been wonderful for me are almond cheese (looks and behaves like mozzerella and tastes good), seitan, beans of all kinds, nuts, nutritional yeast and protein powder. I don't count the protein in rice-I consider that a bonus. I prefer to err on the side of more rather than less protein, especially with the lighter kinds. Guest guest
Hi Ryl, welcome!! I'm on step 7, too and I recently completed the switch to a vegetarian lifestyle. I took it really slowly, taking two years to make the switch fully and, like JoEllen, used my journal to guide the pace. There was a couple times I went faster then my body could handle and had to backtrack. But I've been vegetarian for almot four months now and am feeling steady, happy, and calm. I think your plan to try one vegetarian meal a day and see how things go is great! You may even want to transition to that point and start with one or two meals a week. If you are doing shake for breakfast you probably are already having one vegetarian meal daily . I sometimes feel like eating vegetarian on the program is like learning to do the food all over again, so I can understand the concern about figuring out how much to eat. What has been working for me is to not count my browns as my protein, eat more browns, and make sure to have plenty of fats. My protein sources are different from what you can eat, but I often find myself mixing protein sources at each meal to make sure I have enough. Hope this helps, looking forward to hearing more about your journey! Heather There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. Thanks for mentioning it though since I may be able to look again and see if I can make a shake work as part of a meal. I don't eat oats or any ground grains, anything with ground up rice or quinoa flours. > I sometimes feel like eating vegetarian on the program is like > learning to do the food all over again, so I can understand the > concern about figuring out how much to eat. Guest guest
JoEllen Thanks! My son eats the almond cheese so I'll look again at the label. I don't eat wheat so that takes out seitan. And in terms of protein powders when I looked last, a long time ago they had either a soy or whey (dairy) base and either worked for me. Is there something else in terms of protein powders to look at that you know of? -Ryl > Welcome! I am on step 7 too and have transitioned gradually > to almost a vegetarian. Guest guest
Ryl, if you are worried about what brown to put in your shake you can always have something on the side that works for you . I prefer my browns on the side typically. Heather There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. I only eat a very small portion of fruit - one large strawberry or 2 apple slices after my lunch meal. So will see about shakes. Maybe a shake can work with lunch time and I put the fruit in it <smile>. thanks -Ryl
Guest guest
Ryl, oh I see! Well have you been to a local health food store to see what protein powders are out there? Naturade makes one that is dairy and soy free. In England I found one that was made from pea protein. For browns, well, whatever brown you have normally at meals could be put on the side. And I have shakes quite often without fruit! You get used to it, plus the flavorings in the store make for a nice addition. Heather There are two ways to live your life. Guest guest
Ryl, My shake every morning is almond milk and Brown Rice Protein powder. I had to experiment for awhile to find one that works for me. (Some are made with sugar) but there are several that aren't. I too don't like grains in the mix. I eat a bowl of porridge on the side. Guest guest
Naturade makes a pea protein as well. And Nutribiotic makes one that is brown rice protein. kathleen On Nov 21, 2008, at 9:58 AM, Heather Butler wrote: > Ryl, oh I see! Guest guest
Those are great points, Heather. I like to mix and match proteins and browns in the same meal too. I rarely eat only one kind of each. Guest guest
Heather, Congradulations on the transition. Mixing proteins @ each meal, what a cool concept, I'll have to try that too = WOW. Thank you so much. Bob , Heather Butler <hawaiihmb wrote: > > Hi Ryl, welcome!!
