Guest guest
For years I've been buying canned beans. This week decided change was in order. Purchased bags of Dried Garbanzo Beans and also Kidney Beans. Soaked 1 cup of each overnight, then cooked in my rice cooker (kind of looks like a crock pot) for 1.75 hours. It was fun and now I have so much food to eat. It's also so much less expensive then the can's, most likely healthier too. Anyhow, just wanted to share. Peace. I am going to have to break that baby out and cook up some beans and rice and oatmeal (not together)...it sounds like fun seeing what the rice cooker will cook!! JJ " Your food shall be your remedy. Guest guest
Bob, I never thought of cooking beans in a rice cooker--how smart! I've been thinking about investing in a rice cooker and now I know there are two ways to use it. Did you season your beans while cooking, or after? Heather There are two ways to live your life. Guest guest
Kathleen, I cook my cereal in there as well. Further also make lentils too. Don't have to baby anything, push the button and walk away, I Like It... Guest guest
This is fabulous, Bob! I had no idea a rice cooker could do so many things. I think it's time for me to get another one. Guest guest
Oh, I've always used dried beans! I find them more, er, digestible than canned. They're also much cheaper, and I prefer the taste and texture. I use a slow cooker. I really like the texture, and it cooks either overnight or while I'm at work. I often just cook up a whole batch plain, then use some in a dish, and put the rest in the fridge or freezer for later. (In fact, I have some mixed garbanzo and soy thawing right now for dinner.) Guest guest
Anne, when you cook beans in the crock pot do you still soak them first? Heather There are two ways to live your life. Guest guest
I usually do, then cook on low. I like them best that way. If I forget, it still works, but may take a bit longer. If I'm in more of a hurry, I cook on high, without soaking, and it only takes about 6 hours, rather than 8. Soybeans, when I use them, I always cook on high. I read years ago that they need that, and haven't really experimented. I only cook them to add to things, though - they're pretty uninteresting alone!
