bento box 2

Today I made my second ever bento box to take to work tomorrow. I tossed some

seitan and broccoli flourets in sesame oil, ginger and garlic and roasted them

in the oven. Then I made some short grained brown rice in an attempt to make

yaki onigiri, which is basically a flattened rice ball, toasted and brushed with

soy sauce. You also stuff them with a little tasty morsel of something, I chose

to use egg scrambled with hot sauce :). Well I did ok shaping the balls, but

they fell apart once I tried frying them, so I ended up with fried rice instead.

Not so bad!! I have one rice ball I didn't try frying, which is simply onigiri,

and I will keep it as such. So tomorrow I have a simple and tasty bento box

with the fried rice, the seitan, broccoli, a cheese stick and some almonds. I

can't wait until lunch tomorrow LOL.

Yummmm!

Did you cook plain brown rice? If so, I wonder if a basic sushi rice

recipe, without the sugar (or mirin or sake) and using plain rice

vinegar, would work for your yaki onigiri...?

I like the idea of having unexpected fried rice <smile>. Eggs and hot

sauce were made for each other! Cinzia

I used a short grain rice that I found in the Asian market by my house. Half

the label was in japanese, so it might be sushi rice LOLOL. Do you happen to

have a basic sushi rice recipe you use? I love this idea :)

And yes, I agree eggs and hot sauce go great together :).

I'm enjoying your adventures, Heather!

I'll post my sushi rice recipe when I get home tonight. I've only

made it the standard way (with seasoned rice vinegar, which has sugar

in it), so I'm not sure how the texture will be w/o the sugar.

I made sushi recently with short grain brown rice and didn't bother with vinegar

and it worked great. I rolled it really tight in the nori and the rolls stayed

together well. I just cooked it with a little extra water and for longer, like

an extra 1/4 cup and 10 minutes so it was a little stickier.
