So this coming Tuesday (January 31st) at noon at Chaco Canyon will be our first get together...for juice or lunch and live/raw foods support and conversation. All are welcome. I am a vegan vegetarian for about 10 years now and I love it. I really like the idea that I am helping to save the earth, my life and the lives of animals that would otherwise be killed for me to eat. I am excited to be connected to like minded people. This is the first time I have contact with kindred spirits. I have one big problem maybe someone can help me out. I exercise daily running/jogging 4 to 5 miles each day and weight training and any other exercise, I can do in that day. I exercise 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours each day. The problem is I get ssssooooo hungry afterwards that sometimes I come home and eat for the rest of the day!! Brown rice pasta with tomato sauce, grains like millet and whatever else is in the house. I also take protein powder before and after my work out. I have a very very slow metabolism and although I am vegan I am over weight. I see a holistic physician and he put me on a vitamin and herb protocol for my thyroid. It is coming off very slowly but it is taking a very long time for me to loose the weight (although I have been overweight for most of my adult life), I really should not be at this point in my life. It is so embarassing when I tell people who ask that I am vegan. They look at me perplexed because I am about 50 lbs over weight!! I am 5'4 around 165 to 170 lbs according to the men it's all in the right places!! Does anyone have any advice or is going through the same thing. Please let me know. I've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for over 20 years now and am also overweight despite being very careful about carbohydrates. I am very very hypoglycemic and carbs can throw me into rebound hypoglycemia so fast I don't have time to get emergency carbs and protein in me. I don't run, but have learned how to walk again. Physical therapy had me sweating and my heart racing as if I had just run a marathon. I would have a protein shake after and it helped. The protein shakes also help if I want to munch my way through the day. Have you considered a protein supplement? I use whey protein supplements but that isn't vegan, but there are a number of soy protein powders on the market. Carbs will give you instant energy but protein will carry you a lot longer. My best friend in childhood was named Elsie. She just hated it because there was this ELSIE THE BORDEN COW around in those days and she was a chubby little thing and kids are cruel. She was Italian - first generation born in the U.S. Are you? I love the thought of your little Sunny. I have heart ferrets are wonderful pets but not happy without other ferrets. Yours sounds darn happy to me (LOL). I have 5 little dogs myself and they are such a delight. Sometimes it is really hard to cook for yourself when you live alone, but force yourself. The only way to eat a good healthy diet is to spend time preparing fresh food. All the packaged stuff and canned stuff is just full of sodium and chemicals, which you in particular don't need while battleing cancer. I work in an acupuncture office where we treat a lot of patients going through chemo and radiation. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be very helpful to these patients, making the process much easier, easing nausea and keeping the body in general good tone. I hope to get good ideas for recipes, share my ideas, get and offer support. And wow--I've already checked out the bento photo and that rocks! I LOVE bentos! I am on step 7. I became a vegetarian when I was 15 or 16. When I started PnP back in the 90s I stopped being a vegetarian. I have often tried to be a vegetarian again, but find that I get low blood sugar very easily. So what would happen is... I end up eating non-vegetarian again. I live in California with my husband and our little girl who is in first grade and we have two darling pet rats. I am an early interventionist, working with families who have babies with special needs. Thank you for letting me be a member of your group! I have been gradually becoming more vegetarian on step 7. I've gotten some great recipes here, for sure. My body still needs some heavier protein like eggs and fish to stay steady, which for me manifests as not cranky, LOL. I'll bet your pet rats are nice. I have some wild but tame black squirrels whom I adore. One takes peanuts out of my hand. Your work sounds very rewarding. Where I grew up there were only gray squirrels with fluffy tails...then when I moved west I was enchanted by adorable little black squirrels. Where I'm living now, some are reddish brown, some are black and some are gray! One of my pet rats is featured on Rat of the Week at the website of the ran fan club. I really know what you mean about needing that heavier protein. I get foggy, droopy, cranky...the whole seven dwarves of low blood sugar! I was a meat eater when I started the program and decided that after 5 years I wanted to try vegetarian eating on the program. I did a 2 year switch over and now, going on 8 years in RR I've been able to stay steady on vegetarian protein sources. It took awhile to figure out what would work for my body, and every once in awhile I'd find I had to add in more meat because was feeling depressed, but after 4 straight months of vegetarian eating (in the winter!) Guest guest Posted October 26, 2009 Report Share Posted October 26, 2009 I've been doing the fat free vegan (was already vegan) for 2 years and 8 months (since interviewing Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn). I feel fantastic. It's important, imho, to really go at least three months without adding oil/vegan margarine/fatty vegan mayo to your meals. The goal here is not just for your cardiovascular system, but to " re-condition " or, in Essy's words, " re-calibrate " your taste buds. Yes, you definitely can lose the taste for fat. But, again, imho, using added fat after ridding yourself of the craving for fat, is like an alcoholic trying to have one drink. For me, I find it's best to stay on track. Sure, at friend's or when out I might get some, but I don't allow it at home. The vigor, energy, and well-being I've noted works for me and I don't want to lose that all due to an old temptation.
